W Thurston and Orlean Wright Thurston came to ManU Mantl to operate Thurstons Thurston's Confectionary Confection Confection- ary in the building presently occupied by Millers Miller's Bakery Mr Thurston attended Manti ManU schools and graduated from Mantl Manti High School In 1945 He entered the Naval Academy at Annapolis Maryland as a midshipman mid mId- shipman in June 1946 Following graduation from the Naval Academy In June 1950 and receiving his commission commission commission com com- mission of or Ensign he was called called called call call- ed off graduation leave to re report report report re- re port to the Boxer for Im Immediate immediate immediate im- im mediate sailing to the far east eastIn In support of the Korean War In 1951 Ensign Thurston was ordered to flight training at Pensacola Florida and later received advanced training at Corpus Christi Christ Texas He was then assigned to flight duty in Oahu Hawaii KodIak Alaska and Iwakuni Japan with Patrol Squadron 28 based at Barber Point Hawaii Returning from Japan Lieutenant Lieutenant Lieutenant Lieu Lieu- tenant Thurston was assigned to the US U.S. Naval Postgraduate School Monterey California and later completed his postgraduate postgraduate postgraduate post post- graduate work at the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena Pasadena Pasadena Pasa Pasa- dena California with a degree In Aeronautical Engineering He was then assigned to duty with the Air Submarine Anti Development Development Development Devel Devel- Squadron in Key West Florida In 1960 Lieutenant Commander Commander Com- Com mander Thurston Joined the thesta sta staff taff of the Commander Second Fleet leet as Submarine Anti-Submarine and Guided Missiles Officer During DurIng Dur- Dur Ing ng two years in this position he served on three different cruisers and was at sea for 15 months With an appointment to Commander in 1963 he was transferred to the Naval Academy Academy Academy Acad Acad- emy where his assignment was to teach Applied Thermodynamics Thermodynamics Thermodynamics Thermo-dy- Thermo and Applied Fluid Mechanics to senior class mid mid- He became assistant department head of the Marine Engineering Department in 1965 and was appointed department head In June 1967 Commander der Thurston became the Executive ve Officer of the Engineering College College College Col Col- lege of the Naval academy where he served until July 1968 when he was transferred to the Office of Naval Research in London England While in England Commander Thurston reported on the development development development devel devel- of aircraft power plants and special equipment In countries throughout Europe It was while on assignment In England that Commander Thurston and his family made the decision following 20 years of service to leave the navy and accept a position at Brigham Young University as Assistant Dean of the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences Mr Thurston married Mary MaryLou MaryLou MaryLou Lou Jenkins in Salt Lake City In September 1951 and they are the parents of three chil chil- dren Mr Thurstons Thurston's mother Mrs Orlean Thurston resides in Manti ManU r Mr S I MR rm DICK WRIGHT THURSTON I |
