Show Coed Wins Attendant Role The past month has been a beehive of activity for a Manti ManU Miss as she served a term termas as first attendant to the Days of oC 47 queen When asked How does It feel to be first attendant to the Days of 47 Queen Miss Dyreng answered It Is just next best to being queen but butI I still feel Ceel very much like it is isa isa isa a beautiful dream and every night when the clock strikes 12 I expect to have it all end and I fear Cear the carriage will become a pumpkin and Ill I'll re return return return re- re turn to plain Marilou But it has been a rich and rewarding experience filled with opportunities opportunities opportunities that I shall never for for- get u. u When questioned What l have been your responsibilities during during during dur dur- ing the past two months as a member of or the queens queen's court she replied We have tried diligently to honestly represent the youth of oC our church and state as we have made hundreds hundreds hundreds hun hun- of personal appearances We ha have ve had a very rigorous schedule We have spoken at many sacrament meetings inand in inand inand and about Salt Lake City Manti ManU and American Fork Many Sundays Sundays Sundays Sun Sun- days we have spoken at three sacrament meetings and at youth firesides Coli following owing church services We have been guests at prominent mens men's clubs and women's organizations where we have spoken or sung We Ve were guests at the D II for Decency conclave held in inthe inthe inthe the Tabernacle where we were presented to the large audience We have been guests at marvelous marvelous marvelous mar mar- concerts and productions and have taken part in numerous numerous numerous numer numer- ous parades We have been feted at beautiful luncheons elegant dinners picnics and dances We have been interviewed on radio and television and everywhere everywhere everywhere every every- where we have met great peo peo- We have met stars celebrities celebritIes celebrities cele cele- important church and civic leaders We have greeted people at receptions and teas and have been given many gifts We have had our pictures snapped snapped snapped snap snap- ped hundreds of oC tI times mes and signed Innumerable autographs But I suppose one of the most rewarding of all the glorious glorIous glorious glor glor- ious experiences was the op opportunity opportunity opportunity op- op to meet President Da David David David Da- Da vid 0 O. O McKay and his lovely wife Pres Nathan E E. E Tanner escorted us to Pres McKays McKay's apartment and presented us to this great man where we were privileged to have a personal Interview with him Mm We then Inquired When did Marilou She this all begin said The Days of 47 Queen Contest Is sponsored by the state Daughters of oC the Utah Pioneers and was held May 3 In Salt Lake City There were girls from Utah Idaho and Canada who competed for the title The contest began at 11 am a.m. with a luncheon and continued continued continued con con- through the afternoon and into the evening and until 1230 am a.m. the next morning May 4 when the queen and attendants attendants attendants attend attend- ants were named The girls were selected by bya a panel Danel of judges from Crom the A Salt Lake area on poise personality and ability to answer answer ans ans- questions There was no talent contest Involved The girls were eliminated first from to finally 10 and then it became sort of an endurance contest We Ve were officially crowned in an impressive and beautifully beautifully beautifully fully arranged coronation held in the historic Assem Assembly ly Hall Hallon on Temple Square on May 23 We marched Into the hall in lovely matching gowns to a 3 trumpet and organ fanfare and and were serenaded by an ex excellent excellent excellent ex- ex combined chorus from the Salt Lake City high schools and were crowned by Mrs Joan Fisher Mrs America We were admonished by Neal Maxwell vice president of the University University University sity of Utah as to our re responsibIlities responsibilities re- re to emulate our pioneer heritage but also we were given the charge to reproduce re reproduce reproduce re- re produce it Often times during the past month I have felt like a modern girl trying to fit into my great- great grandmothers grandmother's shoes and wear her dress My pioneer heritage has become very meaningful and dear to meI meI me meI I have tried very hard to adequately represent the good people from Sanpete and Manti ManU at these various functions and andI I appreciate the support and interest you people have had hadIn hadin hadin in meThis meThis me This glorious experience will soon end and Im I'm sure C- C when the fare fan and glamour is over the things that will endure will be the wonderful people we have met friends we have made and the challenges we have been forced to meet which have made us grow per per- More re than ever I ap appreciate appreciate appreciate ap- ap growing up In Manti ManU and Sanpete where the greatest people on earth Ii live ve Marilou is the year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Morgan Morgan Morgan Mor Mor- gan Dyreng She has been stay- stay Ing in Salt Lake City this summer summer summer sum sum- mer with Clara and Margaret Anderson where she has been employed by the State Dept of oC Education She will wUl leave August on a day 50 tour with the BYU program bureau They will present present present pre pre- sent programs all allover over the East coast COlst from Florida to Boston on into Canada and on their way home through the midwest She will appear In group numbers and as a soprano soloist She will continue her schooling at BYU this fall Jf r f kI rr r r d 2 I 41 fr 3 f fr r C IY o i jq i j r k k f L 1 t L r k rV Y A 1 ti M L t A Days of 47 royalty Includes ManU Manta High School coed Marilou Dyreng right |
