S Holm director of Snow College College College Col Col- lege Ephraim in a well or organized organized or- or address entitled How Much is Enough Education Dr Holm developed his subject subject sub sub- by pointing out how all of us are citizens trying to tomake tomake tomake make a living in a way that will give both boUt happiness and anda a maximum of productivity To do this all need strong bodies to house sound and productive e minus s and thus become be become become be- be come the best possible citi citi- zens He noted the rapid changes taking place in practically all fields of human existence and work Whereas not so many years ago a sor son could plan to tobe tobe tobe be apprentice to his father and then follow fonow in his fathers father's vocation vo vocation vocation vo- vo cation for an entire lifetime now with the rapid technological technological technological advances the average man can expect to have to change his manner of making a living perhaps three or four times during his working ye years rs Dr Holm said In UIn addition to political knowledge and sensitivity we must if we are to be the best kinds of citizens be aware of the environment in which we live This should include an understanding appreciation and enjoyment of that which is beautiful he said We must learn vocational competence competence competence compe compe- tence in some field and we must most of us from this h hr hn nr r n ni-ft ni rI fn w v I MAV v v Ul f. f fi f v vt IV v chan change chance e the mode for making a living several times during a work lifetime He pointed out how the trend of training has shifted from the home and family from apprenticeships etc to giving givin an increasing amount of ot responsibility for total learning learn learn- ing to the schools He then brought out how the junior community college is being devel developed ped to attempt to meet at least parts of the objectives He said William Rainey Harper former president of the University of Chicago is usually referred to as the father of the junior college movement In 1892 he organized organIzed organized organ organ- the university into the upper junior and senior classes division and the lower academic academie college freshmen and md sophomores divisions In 96 1895 the name academic college was changed to Junior College For the first thirty years of junior college movement the work was largely transfer or university parallel essentially essentially essen essen- the same kind of programs programs programs pro pro- grams offered to freshmen and sophomores b by universities It was about 1930 when the community college concept took root an and began to grow Dr Holm pointed out It be became became became be- be came especially sensitive to the educational needs of the community area hence its name In 1900 01 there were only eight junior colleges in the United States all private with witha a total enrollment of stu stu- dents In 30 1929 there were junior colleges private private pH- pH vate and public enrolling By 60 1959 there were such schools private and public enrolling approximately ap approximately ap- ap proximately students In the year just past students were enrolled in junior colleges Dr Holm listed four of the national trends in the junior college movement as 1 From private to public support 2 From small to large in size with Long Beach City College in C California having an enrollment last year of 25 students 3 F Fro From r o m predominantly males toward numerical equality equality equality equal equal- ity between the sexes 4 Toward become tuition free although this is contrary to the trend in Utah In addition to transfer credits credits credits cre cre- which they continue to provide the junior colleges now provide training in several several several sev- sev sev sev- eral different fields with emphasis emphasis em em- on an citizenship teaching and a n d terminal education Among the vocational technical cal courses that can be completed completed completed com com- in two years or less he gave the example of San Bernadino Valley College which includes aircraft mechanic mechanic mechanic me me- me- me auto mechanic diesel mechanic electrician electronics electronics electronics elec elec- technician TV serviceman serviceman service service- man draftsman machinist welder refrigeration Some offer apprentice programs in such lines as carpenter plumber plumber plumber plum plum- ber refrigeration specialists etc Another growing field is continuing e education for the adults to help them obtain vocational competence in the ever changing fields of em em- em He told how schools provide special courses if desired by bya a given number of persons ten at Snow College Perhaps because of its sensitivity sensitivity sensitivity sen sen- to the community and the community's educational needs the junior college has captured the fancy of the American people and continues contin contin- ues to do so in an in ever creasing degree e Dr Holm concluded |
