Show Forest Completes Bark Beetle Beete Control Program Completion of the fall spruce bark beetle beetIe control program on the LaSal Manti-LaSal National Forest was announced today by Forest Supervisor George L. L Burnett These tree killing beetles are attacking spruce trees on about 2000 acres of private state and national forest lands in the Dark Canyon area of the LaSal Mountains Moun- Moun trins near Moab Utah A total of f trees stumps and logs were treated this fall This Thi makes a total of infested trees that have been treated in inthis inthis this his area during the past two years ears The infested trees stumps and logs are either treated with a 1 chemical that kills the insects or they are burned Studies have shown that the chemical spray pray applied to the trees will kill cill the beetles without harming harming harm- harm ing ng animals or humans As many trees rees as possible are also removed removed re removed re- re moved from the woods and cut cutin cuti i in n t o 0 lumber Approximately 26 million board feet of timber have lave been removed from the area under this control program Technical information on control control con- con rol of this insect was supplied by entomologists from the Intermountain Intermountain In- In Forest and Range Experiment Station and the control control con- con rol program was carried out by District Ranger John K It is estimated that one more year will be needed to control contro the insects |
