Show I I I News From Our Missionaries Elder Don E. E Strobel now serving a mission in Texas fexas took time off from his missionary labors recently to write a piece for Cor the Zavala County Sentinel The Sentinel is published at Crystal City Texas and ran the following article by Elder Strobel DEMOCRACY AT WORK VORK The item below was written by Elder Don E. E Strobel a Mormon Mormon Mormon Mor Mor- mon Missionary 1 who has been in Crystal City for the past el eleven eleven eleven el- el even months and will leave leav this week end for Alpine Texas He Ho grew up in Utah under entirely different conditions to what he found here and was greatly impressed impressed impressed im im- im- im pressed with how people of different different different dif dif- dif dif- ferent races and religious be beliefs beliefs beliefs be- be live together in peace and harmony Eleven months ago I entered among you as a stranger I have lived among you observed your manners of living fellow association association association asso asso- and worship With your permission I would make a few observations with relationship to our democracy During the past months I have been deeply and constantly impressed with this thought DEMOCRACY AT WORK YORK As all may know there is only one criterion by which we may judge or measure any system designed to regulate human re re- re That criterion i is the produced result result and by the I merits or results effectuated by each regulative system let it so sobe sobe sobe be judged Everyone may be acquainted with the old proverb The liThe proof of the pie is in the eating illustrating ill illustrating illustrating ill ill- the true worth of a athing athing athing thing is demonstrated in the produced results Also to note another example the greatest teacher of all time who lived nearly two thousands years ago stated By their fruits ye shall know them Thus one would quickly agree the worth and true value of a governmental system can be measured by the quality of the plane of relationships relationships relationships rela rela- of its citizens It is these fruits and results which had impressed me as being good examples of DEMOCRACY AT WORK VORK The number of inhabitants in Crystal City is variable but I through the winter months when I I the population is highest the number hovers near eight thou thou- sand The number of citizens who abide here is not so large as IS to prohibit comparatively close association of all nIl problems attitudes thoughts theories and efforts Thus offering a fertile fertil bed in which to plant the seed seedof seedof seedof of a workable democracy Did you know that every everyone one of the three human races of the world are represented here All AU Allare Allare are living as neighbors neighbors neighbors neigh neigh- bors all are contributing to the education of each others other's children children children child child- ren and all are working together er to satisfy the needs of living Were Vere you aware of the fact that Crystal harbors more than religious groups representing representing representing most of the major factions factions factions fac fac- among the Christian be believers believers believers be- be lievers of the world All groups arc are maintaining a tolerant attitude attitude attitude atti atti- tude one towards another re respecting respecting respecting the individual and group rights as granted by this democracy Among the teeming masses of the world in all probability probability probability pro pro- Crystal is unique I have had bad the opportunity of observing your schools in which students from varying backgrounds backgrounds backgrounds back back- grounds environments and be beliefs beliefs beliefs be- be are mingled together and it is encouraging to note the tolerance a and n d understanding which is being bred into the rising gener generation tion in the hope of a more workable democracy in the future My ly association with many of the business men has convinced me that they have a genuine interest in the economic welfare of the community as exhibited by generous and friendly atti atti- tudes I have sat in the congregations congregations congregations of your churches listened to the sermons enjoyed with you the spirit of worship and gained from each something of interest and enlightenment Thus without doubt I am able to say that each is striving to enrich the lives of the followers However I could not leave you without saying that the sore spots have not gone undetected I have a private proverb which states weeds grow in every garden Thus it goes without saying that in this garden of blooming fruits of the system grow also the thorny problems The quicker they can be forced into oblivion by diligent understanding understanding understanding under under- standing efforts better will be bethe bethe bethe the community for your children in which to raise their children I write this not in an effort to win friends for myself or orthe orthe orthe the people I represent but with the attitude of a student or observer who entered devoid of any preconceptions and will leave opinionated to the fact that here lies a good example for all who may care to examine examine examine exam exam- ine that the fruits and results are worthwhile when grown in ina a community where DEMOCRACY CY IS AT WORK VORK Elder Don E.
