E Anderson is ending end- end ending ing ng tomorrow 14 years as superintendent su superintendent superintendent su- su of the South Sanpete Sanpete San- San pete School district He is leaving caving for N Nephi to take the position of superintendent of the he Juab district after having lived ived in Manti 1 since 1929 Many changes improvements and alterations take place in the space of 14 years and realizing that we would surely miss some of the important items in lookIng looking looking look- look Ing them up on our own we asked Mr 11 Anderson to furnish us with some data He responded respond respond- ed very graciously with the following following following fol fol- lowing information The Pub Pub- lishers ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE SOUTH SANPETE SCHOOL DISTRICT DURING THE PAST FOURTEEN YEARS With the aid of the Board of Education and the loyal support of the school teachers under the supervision of Superintendent Superintend Superintend- ent Leland E. E Anderson the following accomplishments have been made during the past fourteen fourteen fourteen four four- teen years 1 1 Fourteen years ago there was not a library in our school system Now every school in our district has an adequate li library library library li- li room well equipped with thousands of books on the Dewey-decimal Dewey system 95 per percent percent percent cent of our students have access to the help of librarians I 2 There are now facilities for taking care of sick or injured students There are sick rooms with adequate first aid supplies A large percentage of our teachers teach teach- ers are trained in first aid 3 Our schools are now well equipped with adequate class classroom classroom classroom room furniture and room facil facil- We Ve have discarded the orange boxes all elementary reading circles used for seats 4 From small carpentry shops we have now new beautiful Mechanical Mechanical Mechanical Me Me- Arts buildings Here with thousands of dollars worth of machinery and tools our In Industrial Industrial Industrial In- In Arts programs are greatly expanding 5 Organized by Supt Leland Continued on Page 4 Ends 14 Years As School Supt Continued from Page 1 11 E E. Ten years ago with the help of the State School office a testing program was set up in iu our district which is invaluable in connection with remedial planning for the students' students wel wel- fare 7 For fourteen years we have had an excellent training training training train train- ing for all teachers of building meetings and institutes institutes institutes have been held 8 South Sanpete has consolidated consolidated consolidated consol consol- their school plant and program to a minimum The Junior High from Sterling is isnow isnow isnow now transported to Manti Fayette Fayette Fay- Fay ette schools have been closed and all students are now transported transported transported trans trans- ported to Gunnison schools Axtell Axtell Axtell Ax- Ax tell and Clarion schools have been closed and these students are now sent to Centerfield 9 No student is doing his best unless he is physically well and adequately fed In In Inthis this connection connection connection tion our immunization program is one of the best in the State Under the direction of our school nurse all students are well cared for A second phase of the health program is that of our most excellent Lunch Centers With the exception of Sterling every school in our district now has available modern kitchens equipped equipped equipped equip equip- ped with the best facilities obtainable ob obtainable ob- ob and operated by well- well trained personnel 10 During the World War Var all trainees for the Parachute Plant during its it's initial period were under the supervision of the District School office Since the war closed there has been or organized organized or- or three G. I training pro pro- grams These are reported by Mr 11 Mark 1 Nichols as among the best in the State 11 Last mentioned but may maywell maywell maywell well be the first named South Sanpete now has one of th the most loyal and well trained corps of teachers in this nation Much credit is due them for their deep interest in expanding expanding expand expand- ing the role of the school program pro pro- gram During his years in Manti lanti Superintendent Anderson has been active in civic affairs and has done much church work He taught Seminary and Junior Junio Seminary in Manti 1 from 1929 to 1937 and during this time taught a Sunday School class I Ia a Mutual class and was president president I dent of the Elders quorum During During During Dur Dur- ing part of this period he taught I Ia a class under the direction of the Quorum of Seventy for all prospective missionaries and al also also also al- al so taught a training teacher-training class for the Sunday School Mr Anderson was made first counselor in the Center Ward Vard bishopric in 1936 and still continued continued continued con con- to teach his Sunday School and Mutual classes Becomes Stake President i I The office of Stake President became Mr 11 Andersons Anderson's in 1937 and he served as head of the 7 wards of the stake until 1944 He was chairman of five stakes in the Welfare program during his time as stake president During this time the stake sponsored missionary calls to do temple work and the temple conducted special sessions regularly regularly regularly regu regu- especially for this stake While stake president Mr r. Anderson Anderson Anderson An An- derson continued teaching a I I I I Sunday School class Mr Anderson spent the 1944 45 year in Berkeley California and while there taught a Sunday Sunday Sunday Sun Sun- i day School Class Mutual class I and a training class for all prospective prospective prospective pro pro- teachers of the Richmond Richmond Richmond Rich Rich- mond ward Heads Stake Sunday Schools He served as Stake Superintendent Superintendent Superintendent of Sunday Schools from 1945 to 1947 and taught many lessons in Sunday Schools Mu- Mu and Firesides He Ic taught the M 1 Men 1 and Gl Gleaner Girls of the Center Ward one of these years Since 1947 Mr Anderson has hns t taught constantly in the Center Center Center Cen Cen- ter Ward Vard Sunday School and has hns given many Mutual lessons and appe appeared red at many Fireside meet meet- ings As a member of the High Council he has hns had a speaking engagement in one of the wards once a month and was High Councilman in charge of the Stake Sunday Schools Along with two others he has had charge of the Priesthood boys He has hns for the last four foul years served a mission as an ordinance worker in the MantiL Manti 1 L DS temple and is still serving serving serving ing this mission |
