Show MANTI PIONEER TALES by MANTI FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS I MORE TROUBLE By Merle Larsen All through the Ule fall faIl and winter of 51 1850 the Indians were very trou trou- They would steal the cattle and horses every chance they got They would beg for food and anything anything anything any any- thing just to bother the white men The Indians said they would scalp the pioneers if they didn't do just justas as they were told The white men did not like that at all nIl The Pioneers had a corral down the cemetery lane This lane used to be bethe bethe bethe the main highway out of Manti Cattle were driven to this corral at night and in dangerous times Guards took care of the cattle One day some Indians went down downto to the herd corral They turned their horses loose and went up to the Ule herd house They wanted to go inthe in inthe m the cabin but George Peacock the guard wouldn't let them This made the Indians mad so they climbed to the Ule roof and started to tear a hole in it One One of the braves crime came came and reported that an alarm had been given and men from Manti were coming coming coming com com- ing to guard the cattle The Indians s started for the hills as fast as they could go got TilE THE STONE FORT I The pioneers didn't like the first I townsite that had been surveyed In Inthe Inthe Inthe the spring of 1852 they decided to move a little farther south of the Temple Hill The block on which our schools are built was chosen as ns the center of town The rest of the blocks were laid off from there A few of the wanted to start building homes on their city lots The Indians were becoming more and more troublesome so most so-most most of the people thought it would be best to Fort iri in On May 7 1852 the pioneers started started started start start- ed to build the Ule stone fort They built it on the quarter block where the Reliance and md Bishops Bishop's buildings now stand The following article Is copied from froman an old Deseret News A leA letter from Manti City Sanpete County dated June 27 1852 s states that Manti at last is blessed with a strung strong well built stone fort It has a gate on the Westside West Westside Westside side and in the Ule center of or the th wall It has round bastians at the northwest northwest northwest north north- west and southeast corners The walls are arc eight feet high and two feet thick It sets on a foundation of stone three feet wide Sylvester Hulet is the keeper |
