Show WHERE DO WE VE LOSE MOST l I At At this time the American people are thinking about the election of a president of the United States of of- Senators and Represent Representatives tives in and of various state and local Minds l will vill be centered upon issues and candidates until the election is over It is natural that voters will want the best men men elected and the party in power which offers the best platform with the greatest assur assurance nce of backing it up But while we are listening to the arguments for this and that candidate in national affairs let us investigate carefully those seeking office in our own community and county A virtue virtue virtue vir vir- vir- vir tue sometimes times apparently overdone is the importance attached to the candidate running for the most honored position or highest highest highest high high- est place in government a a virtue overdone only when it is is too much distracted fr from m local affairs Suppose for example that a federal official a million dollars or that his inefficiency of administration resulted in that amount of economic loss While Thile the act would be reprehensible or deplorable deplorable deplorable de de- de- de as the case might be the individual taxpayer would hardly feel the loss because the loss would be distributed ove over i so great a number It would not be felt as much as th the loss loss ofa ofa of a a thousand dollars due to the mal administration on of a local or county official Our own local government up to and including the state government after all and in many respects is the more lnore import import- ant It is more important because it affects directly our homes schools transportation peace and order and general welfare There are fewer upon whom the responsibility must rest therefore therefore therefore there there- fore individual responsibility becomes greater in fn local govern meat ment Every problem affecting the nation in general affects our own community in particular and the reverse is true It is certainly ly no disgrace to get out and work lork for the best people to administer our out local affairs It is the kind of politics of which no one need be ashamed because politics honestly entered into and faithfully engaged in is a mark of good citizenship and becomes becomes becomes be be- comes of genuine civic and community interest A off far-off president is none the less ss important important because because he is far off But in the general run of affairs a local official who goes wrong can come nearer breaking us us- It is the man or woman woman wo wo- 0 man whose voice we can hear whose hand we can shake who is close at home a and whose destiny is undeniably linked up with ours that should engage a near and dear interest on the part of every citizen 1 t I I.
