several stories which and rd from the lips of a man who I closely watched Hitler's career its earliest beginning The Theis Theis is Fred a former ague iague ague of mine In fact I was in having him rum sent to toas b as correspondent for the Con- Con Press just about the time timer jr r was beginning his political ere er ng before anybody else took tooker r er r seriously wrote to tok t k This man is some day going I be the bull in Europe's china p P- P who is now in hington told me the following fy y which he also repeats in his I book This Is the Enemy j is you know Hitler was always He never drank any- any J tg rg but some very weak beer es- es ally lally lly brewed for him and he only sips of this pale beverage Gently his habits changed I who visited him at his I quarters early in the winter told J says that he was oming Doming grave and irritable and andt It t it was not uncommon for him hima a cold night to drink three or Ir glasses of grog He also took drinks of a Bavarian for for r called Enzian which is not note ce e gin ow owe w is an exceedingly f ble ible reporter and when he says fuehrer Fuehrer finished three grogs in evening I believe it also it-also also I bd- bd s' s e a that a man unused to taking hol l must have been higher than thans s I when he went to bed nd i k er also said There is a are re man physician of international mute ute ute who believes that some day flier VIer ler will have a brain disturbance al' al serious na nature ure This his physician ff treated Hitler since 1921 and ws his physical condition as well wellis IS lis personal life It is his opinion Hitler is an outstanding exam- exam f 5 of f a trained half-trained half-educated half Bon on with a phenomenal talent for f f and co ion tion and detail gleaned from oth- oth This attention to detail pattern he says is obvious in iners iner's iners iner's ers er's drawings in his speeches military campaigns It is a phe phe- mental power but some somo someday someday day it is going to explode Suicide the End Without revealing the source I have heard the opinion expressed by bya a man who has seen and met with Hitler times and is many exceedingly exceeding exceeding- ly familiar with his life that it is is quite possible that a me mental tal decline has started which he believes may end in suicide On my own score I may say that when I heard Hitler deliver his famous famous famous fa fa- fa- fa speech at the start of the war warin warin warin in 1939 in which he said that he was going to the front and would lead Germany to victory that he would not take off his uniform until this had been achieved and in the next breath named his successors I thought he was preparing for suicide I doubt if he is now dead He may not even be ill but the thing is there has been no report of any public appearance for a long time That of course is hearsay evidence evi evi- dence or dence-or or long-distance long diagnosis but what reports comes from hand first-hand authority So Hitler may already be in a padded cell cell and and nobody seems to care Fourth Term Term Term- Does Want It Will the President run for a Fourth Term A number of cross currents are definitely in motion some som directly moving toward an attempt to draft Mr Roosevelt as candidate in 44 some which at present seem to be carrying him in the opposite tion One thing that many people fail to realize is the fact that when the precedent against a man serving inthe in inthe inthe the White House for more than two terms was broken the first olive was out of the bottle and the chief obstacle obstacle ob ob- obstacle stacle to a fourth term was re re- re- re moved As has been pointed out the American people never before wanted wanted wanted want want- ed a man for a third term candidate candidate candidate candi candi- date although twice before candidates candidates candidates candi candi- dates would have made the attempt Grant and Theodore Roosevelt When the first whispers for a possible possible possible pos pos- sible third term for Franklin Roosevelt Roosevelt Roosevelt Roose Roose- velt were heard I talked to a seasoned seasoned seasoned sea sea- political observer He said the President doesn't want to run again but he will be persuaded to by his friends I make bold to state at this juncture juncture junc junc- juncture ture that exactly the same statement statement statement state state- ment can be made today with one h l. l L A. ut r A JL L want to run for a fourth term but buthis buthis buthis his friends are trying to persuade him to I feel sure that the President does not want to run again I do believe he passionately desires to preside at the peace table But some of his friends have a different view As Joseph secretary to President President President Pres Pres- ident Wilson Vilson once remarked about the White House Its a nice boarding boarding boarding board board- ing house you hate like the dickens to move out Fri Friends Friends' Demands Two things are acting in favor of persuading the President One this earnest and insistent demand of his friends who dont don't want to move out and some of whom honestly believe believe believe be be- lieve that it would be for the general good if the President stayed on Their arguments are many The second factor and the one which could elect Mr Roosevelt for fora a fourth term if he does run again can be expressed in the well-known well slogan Dont swap horses while crossing a stream It is the reasoning reasoning reasoning rea rea- behind this homely expression expression expression sion which of course provides the most persuasive argument to any President On the other hand if by 1944 Hitler Hitler Hitler Hit Hit- ler has been defeated the President might feel that he could serve even better at the peace table if he were not the head of a political party if he were not bound by certain domestic domestic do do- domestic policies which the head of an administration must administer with one eye on the votes in the next election I believe that if the President felt positively that he would be allowed to play the principal role in the peace peacemaking even though someone else were in the White House perhaps perhaps perhaps per per- haps a Republican or if he felt that as President he would be less effective as a peacemaker he would not consider a fourth term |
