Show Modern Yo Youth th Needs to Be Taught b Obedience to to Constituted Authority By JOSEPHUS DANIELS Secretary Ex-Secretary of the Nary Na Just as the military service in America needs the broadening spirit of the schools so there is a crying need at this this' hour for the spirit of discipline in the schools and colleges I believe the pendulum has swung too far from the practice of the fhe precept spare the rod and spoil the child The breaking down of discipline and the lowering of standards is not debatable The only debatable question is how to secure adherence to high standards and respect for authority I submit that as the mil military tary service needs the ameliorating influence of the schoolroom so the schoolroom stands in need of the principles inculcated in military military y men They are 1 Respect for authority 2 Acceptance of discipline 3 Love of the flag The goal is self-discipline self but youth must be taught the everlasting truth that obedience to constituted authority is the first lesson of life lif and that without such respect there cannot be developed the sturdy qualities essential to noble character |
