Show UTAH fARM BUREAU COMING TO fRONT So much has been accomplished during the present year in the way of ot favorable legislation and Improved means of marketing the farm products products pro pro- ducts of ot the state through the efforts of ot the U Utah State Farm Bureau that little trouble Is expected in securing the greater part of ot the farmers of Utah as members of ot the bureau for next year rear during the membership drive which will be conducted between between between be be- tween now and January 1st There is a greater spirit of or optimism optimism opU among the farmers of or the state at present than has been evidenced for tor many years due to the crop the good prices and the tho ready markets which have been heen secured through the activities of the many cooperative cooperative co co- operative marketing associations of the bureau At present the farm bureau is taking taking taking tak tak- ing up the tho fight of l preventing the application application application ap ap- ap- ap of the western railroads which asks for a blanket increase of ot 5 6 per cent in freight rates on all farm Carro products from passing the tho interstate commerce commission If It this Increase increase in In- crease should be granted the tho carriers It would mean that the farmers would pay an additional a year in freight rates or an Increase of 20 a n piece for each of ot tho the farmers farmers farm farm- ers In the state Besides putting forth an effort to prevent any increase in the rates on farm products E. O Foubert manager manager manager mana mana- ger of or the Merchants and Manufacturers Manufacturers Manufacturers Traffic Service Bureau who has bas been appearing before a committee commit commit- tee of the interstate commerce commission commission com com- mission at a meeting which was recently recently ree re re- re- re e conducted at Denver is attempting attempting at at- tempting to secure a decrease on many of the farm products which are shipped out of the state Utah at the present time is kept t tout out of ot much of ot the Wyoming and North Dakota by discriminatory discriminatory I atory rates according to some of the evidence presented by Mr Foubert It Is now possible to ship potatoes from Ogden to Memphis Tenn cheaper than the they can be shipped I from Ogden to Casper Wyoming The rate on mixed vegetables from Brigham Brigham Brig Brig- I ham City to Evanston Wyoming is 36 cents per hundred x pounds while the rate from Ogden to the same I point is 38 cents a hundred pounds i despite the fact the distance is ty-two ty miles mlles farther in the first in in- stance Much effort was put forth by the farm bureau to be prepared to present present pre pre- sent the tho best evidence at the hearing Four hundred copies of ot the brief and exhibits had to be prepared In each copy there were exhibits or a total total total to to- tal of pages of Hof evidence The membership campaign will be carried into every county In the state during the next month and one half In many sections the work Is under underway underway underway way while other counties are making preparations for the opening of ot the tho drive All of the officers of ot the state bureau bureau bureau bu bu- bu- bu reau including Ephraim Bergeson president M M.
