ber of the Wallace Vallace family during his stay in Man Ian Manti ti ti Claudio is leaving this week to return to his home in Napoli Italy Prior to his de departure departure departure de- de he has visited for a week with friends in California Califor Califor- nia lIe He is the first exchange student student student stu stu- dent permitted to stay for i a. a full year in this area aiea He has gained recognition in the school and community through his music and his creative writing particularly Claudio has written some of his Impressions and comparisons comparisons compari compari- sons of living in America andin and andin in Italy When I knew that my destination destination des des- was Utah from the letter I received from NewYork NewYork New NewYork York stating that I was awarded award award- ed as an exchange student student student stu stu- dent many a person made me aware of the fact that all Utah they thought was a big desert desert desert des des- ert inhabited by a little group of Navajos and Mormons 1 that practiced polygamy F Fro From r o m that time many things changed changed change chang- chang e ed in my mind and md all prejudices prejudices prejudices ices It was filled with withe e were vere e destroyed I I still remember when I first came to Utah the strong Impression my eyes received when we passed the Rocky Mountains 1 In Colorado Al Although Although Although Al- Al though I was very tired that night on the way to Manti ManU from rom Salt Lake City I was impressed by the publicity that was around the highway things that in Italy are very scarce if jf not Imp impossible impassible It was very Int interesting resting for forme forme fori me to note the deep difference difference difference differ differ- ence ence that existed between European and American vil vil- vil lages Italian villages are us usually usually usually us- us apart from roads and usually top of little hills lulls surrounded surrounded surrounded sur sur- rounded by a wall with houses that are very n near ar one an another another another an- an other an the usual castle which dominates the view People that live in these villages usually have their farms away they usually go goto goto goto to to school for the first year in inthe inthe inthe the village school but after for a better education leave the village and go to school in high school n and ties To communities Those who live and make their living In a little village although the distances from a little village and a big city in Italy are much shorter than thanin thanin in Utah are cut in the same way from the life in the city artistic cultural events because of the difference and means of communication Yet things are changing also in this sector of the Italian life especially in the past few years The person who lives in ina a little village is proud of its in medieval costumes and put on a n big contest that can be shooting arch-shooting horse racing or wrestling In which other
