Show Obscene Literature Records Are Subject At Youth Meeting The Sanpete Youth Council sponsored a meeting on obscene materials at the Snow College Auditorium on February 18 The meeting was under the direction direction tion Hon of the Committee on Obscene Obscene Ob Ob- scene Literature with Judge Merrill Hermansen Ephraim as chairman Bishop Irvin B. B Ny- Ny vice chairman of t the Ii e Salt Lake County Youth Protection Protection Protection Pro Pro- Committee was the guest speaker Mr Hermansen opened the meeting by showing some exhibits exhibits exhibits bits of obscene literature that had been collected in Sanpete county Bishop fol followed followed followed fol- fol lowed with an exhibit of a pornographic pornographic pornographic por por- record that had been purchased at a music store These exhibits were used to emphasize emphasize emphasize em em- the problem that exists and as evidence that this material material material ma ma- is finding its way into Utah and the rural communities of the State Linked to Sex Crimes To further emphasize the concern concern concern con con- cern of national leaders on this problem Mr quoted some statistics on sex crimes from a Senate Committee re report report report re- re port which went on to say that there is a relationship between this deplorable statistical summary summary summary sum sum- mary and a mushrooming growth in the production distribution and sale of pornographic ma ma- He also quoted J. J Edgar Hoover Hoover Hoover Hoo Hoo- ver director of the FBI as assaying assaying assaying saying The publication and distribution distribution distribution dis dis- dis- dis of salacious material is a peculiarly vicious evil the destruction of moral character caused by it among lImong young peo peo- pie cannot be over estimated Apathy Makes Big Business Public apathy toward pornography pornography pornography por por- has allowed it to grow into a business stated Mr It is time the citizenry of our communities communities ties and our country took a stand to stop this vicious evil Action Recommended After pointing out the seriousness seriousness seriousness serious serious- ness of the problem Mr l gar recommended the following fields of action A.
