Show Progress in Reading Through self Self Selection selection From rom So Sanpete School Dist One of the newer trends in inthe inthe the le teaching of reading is that of f self In this type of f program a child is guided in in the he selection of books he wishes to o read A wide variety of choices choices choi- choi ces es are made available on grade gradeI levels ranging from very easy I to o books several years over his grade rade level During the week the teacher contacts each child individually two wo or three times to check on comprehension disc discuss ss the book with ith him listen to him read etc tc Careful check has been made of f one sixth grade group that has been jeen reading under this plan They were tested the latter part of f November just shortly after the he program was begun They were vere tested again in May to see seef if f the program was working In reading comprehension the maximum maximum max- max mum growth made by any child va wad vas two years and eight months Ten ein nf of Mm the t Y three n child child- r OJ J rein ren en made over two years growth in n the six-months six period Only two wo students made less than the six months growth Eleven of the he children made over a years year's growth ro in the six months The median for reading comprehension comprehension comprehension com com- in May was grade eight ight and eight months This lacks acks one month of being over two wo years above the national norm for this grade It also means that half of the children were vere reading on a n level of grade and eight months nearly ninth grade level The final scores of the childen children children child- child ren en range from grade three and four our months to grade eleven Three went beyond the he grade eleven level The test only went that high In the vocabulary part of the test the theowest lowest score was grade five and two wo months We Ve feel that this progress of self selection has paid off and we ve will continue to watch and evaluate It as we grow in our powers to administer the pro pro- gram |
