S Church Can Now Call A AFew AFew Few ew Missionaries Most people have read in the daily papers or in publications of the Church of Jesus Christ Christof of Latter day Saints that the churchs church's standing long policy of calling young men to serve erve in inthe inthe inthe the mission fi field ld is now being reinstated to a 3 limited degree Selective Service officials will now permit the calling of one young man no matter what his classification reserve status etc from each ward or each branch of oC or more members during the remainder of 1953 Two such young men may be called during 1954 f fro from r o m each such ward or branch It is pointed out that such a n call will in no way release such sucha a 3 young man from his selective service or other status but will merely mean a 3 postponement in inthe inthe the time he will be called into active service A A young man to be called on mission must be in the year 20 old age group and must not be bein bein bein in line to be called into active service within 30 days Before he leaves es for the mission field he will be given proper clearance clearance clear clear- ance by the Selective Service board Church officials point out that due to a 3 former ruling wherein only those rejected for military could be called as missionaries the main long missionary organization has been badly handicapped In order to make it possible to call some of the needed workers in into into into in- in to the mission field the Selective Selective Selective tive Service has modified its ruling to the extent stated above above a- a bove that one young man regardless of his draft status or classification may be called from each ward during the re remainder remainder re- re of 1953 I IOn On completion of his mission he will be subject to the selective selective selective tive service just as present re returning returning returning re- re turning missionaries arc subject subject subject sub sub- many of whom li like e Carl CarlS S Stott t tot o 11 t and G Gay Gaylen a y 1 e n Cox of M Manti a 3 n t i are now in the ser ser- vice It is just a postponement not a cancellation which has been granted to help alleviate a serious condition which has developed in the churchs church's missionary missionary missionary mis mis- system |
