Show MANTI BOY REPORTS ON STAY AT LEGIONS LEGION'S UTAH BOYS STATE By Neil Domgaard 1 First I would like to say I enjoyed my stay at Boys' Boys State very much I really appreciate the opportunity I had of attending at attending attending at- at tending it this year I was told before I left that the ideas and practices which are taught at Boys' Boys State cannot be obtained any place else in the w world o 0 r rid 1 d except if one one- spends a lifetime in government In my opinion every word of that statement is true Second I would like to make clear what Boys' Boys State really is It is an m annual program sponsored by the American Legion Legion Legion Le Le- gion to make clear the ideas of practical government The founder of Utah Boys' Boys State is Otto A. A a well- well known and r res respected e s p e c c t e d man throughout the state lIe He was very popular among the boys at Boys' Boys State We Ve arrived at Camp Williams at noon Saturday July 11 They immediately assigned us to our barracks We Ve were given all afternoon to get acquainted with some of the boys In the evening evening even even- ing lug we were called to a meeting meeting meeting meet meet- ing where the executive secretary secretary secretary secre secre- tary of Boys' Boys State H. H H. H Bill Fisher acquainted us with the camp rules and the general procedure of Boys' Boys State At this meeting all the counselors were introduced ced and Otto Weis Weis- ley icy gave a short speech The daily program was as follows follows follows fol fol- lows Bugle call at When we had dressed washed etc we had roll call and following that calisthenics were given Then breakfast at at we attended a lecture from to 1100 the boys played baseball baseball baseball base base- ball took a life saving course in swimming or anything they desired in the way of sports sports' At 1100 another lecture was held Captain of the Salt Lake City police had an educational program outlined every day at this time Lunch was at 1200 and and most of the voting was done immediately following lunch We Ve had all afternoon to do what we want want- ed There was baseball softball softball softball soft- soft ball volleyball horseshoes and ami swimming The library a and n d canteen were open at this time also Any kind of campaigning poster painting etc was usually usual usual- ly done at this time At we ate dinner and at we attended another lec lec- ture From to we i were treated with some very I fine entertainment which was brought out by the Salt Lake County Recreation Department At 1000 we hit the sack and at 1030 taps was played This schedule was followed every day except Saturday July 19 which was the day we came home The speakers at these different different different differ differ- ent lectures were the best avail avail- able The boys really enjoyed them We Ve had a man from our own county and city speak tous to tous tous us Don Tibbs explained t. t the h e Continued on Page 3 REPORT ON UTAH BOYS' BOYS STATE i Continued from Page One 4 functions of county commissions Governor Lee also spoke to us l Ia Mayor or Earl J. D C. C Im I'm sure sure we are arc all proud of Del lie He is the first from Manti lanti to tu get elected to that particular position In closing I wish to thank th theS the tho American Legion S for making it possible for me to attend Boys' Boys State this year I only wish every boy of every state could attend Boys' Boys State We Ve could all be better bette citizens and have havea a much better understanding of practical government |
