Show Heres Here's Our Choice For Star All Team For Sanpete anete p With basketball for the season in its it's closing hours at the State Tournament Tournament Tournament Tour Tour- this week we are picking our star all-star team from the Sanpete League this year The team we weare weare weare are picking this year is made up of Seniors Last year we picked two Juniors both of whom we are going along with again this y year ar Our stars all-stars for Cor this year arc are as follow Collow Max Blackham Moroni Fredrick Jensen Manti Earl Brinkerhoff Wasatch Ac A- A c demy Hal Anderson Gunnison Wally Beck North Sanpete Max Blackham was ws one of our choices last year and we feel he has won the right light to be chosen again Max hit a couple of bad games in a row toward the end I of the season but he was outstanding I ing in the Round Robin Tournament Tournament Tournament ment and was chosen to the Region Star All-Star team He is a reliable player who is capable at making points and is an outstanding man manon manon manon on rebounds Fredrick Jensen of Manti ManU was a atop atop atop top scorer throughout the season and made many of his points with his pet shot from the keyhole H His He Heis Heis is the biggest man on our stars all and is also a good man under the b basket One referee who worked several Manti games during the season called Fredrick the best allaround allaround allaround all- all around ball player in the league Earl of Wasatch Academy Academy Academy A- A was a big reason for Cor the showing of his school in league I play and in the tournament Heis He Hi Heis is blessed with long arms giving him the reach on men three or four inches taller and is a workhorse workhorse workhorse work work- horse type player We stated that all of our choices are Seniors but Earl is a question Some say he heis heis heis is a Junior and we haven't been able to check for Cor sure Earl is a good scorer and a or do-or-die man manon manon manon on rebounds Hal Anderson of Gunnison suf- suf Continued on Page 5 OUR CHOICE FOR A SANPETE STAR ALL-STAR TEAM 1 Continued from page 1 a broken nose early in the season a arid acid d was slowed down by this handicap for a time lime so all fans might not agree with us on this choice He is a dependable ball handler a good dribbler and anda a dead eye on long shots Hal isa is isa a smaller man but his scrap ability on long shots and consistent play makes him our choice Weve We've always liked a man on on a team with the ability to draw a defense out with long shots Wally Vally Beck was not the ball of fire we expected him to be this year Some fans figured Wally was suffering from a swelled head due to his good showing last year and his around all-around athletic ability We dont don't know but we think a change of coaches in year mid-year is bad for fora a team and a player more often than it is good Anyway well we'll go go along with Wally in the belief that he be would be even better on a team that would make him work to show up On that last choice we could I have named several other players without hurting our all Considered Considered Considered Con Con- were Clair Faux and ana Benny Jensen of Moroni Kent Hamblin I and Lester Mellor of Manti Ca Cal and Reggie Ross of Sr Snow ow Louie Thornton and Homer Ashton of Wasatch Ron Last Las and Kent of Gunnison and even a couple of Wally's Vallys team mates As coach of our Dream Team of stars all-stars well we'll take Woody Beck of Gunnison We pick Beck For his experience as a team leader lead lead- er and for his ability to bring a team back after it takes defeats G Gunnison started off the season by losing two straight games but came back and lost only twice more during the remainder of the sea sea- son His team met the outstanding Moi roe crew in the first game of the Round Robin and were murdered murdered murdered mur mur- dered though they played most of the last half against Monroes Monroe's second second second sec sec- ond team Beck worked a charm chann over his team though and they I ca came e back to win the next two games and take the consolation crown As referee for the games well we'll take Karl Beal Bea We saw all an but two of the referees in the league in action this year and Karl was tops of the ones we saw He called called caned call can ed them close enough yet allowed the game to keep up its it's tempo Besides calling them fair for both teams Karl has the ability to keep a close game under control We think a good referee should not only be able to call can the turns of play but should be able to keep things under control in the closing closing closing clos clos- ing minutes of a tight game We saw a couple of games this year when other officials seemed to get more excited than the players as close games ended in in a dither |
