Show III OF COMPANY C C C by robert E davenport received too late for last week company was organized at fort mcclellan alabama on may 27 1933 the boys were from the ten counties surrounding meridian mississippi after three weeks con at the fort they were moved over into their home state and set up at ecru miss a soil con serration camp we are very proud of the tact fact that we were one of iha the first companies to be organized since the inception of the our only surviving witness of that period Is the present company clerk paul G father hines who says I 1 know all about company I 1 was right there when it was organ zed although I 1 was a member of a sister company at the time hines was still in a position to observe the of this company after its removal to ecru miss as his corn com pany moved to oxford miss at the same time after a year at ecru the corn com pany was moved to tupelo miss v where here they were under the direction of the park service here the corn com pany distinguished itself by building a beautiful recreation He park of such size and beauty as to have a lodge and a sixty acre lake in it it Is today one of the most beautiful places in northeast mississippi the members of the company ren dered much commin commendable dable work in helping clear the city of tupelo mis sippi after the disastrous tornado on april 5 1936 company remained at tupelo for three and one half years ears on october 13 1937 the company en drained trained on a troop train bound we thought for california and though most ot of them were of a kindred spirit to the man mart who said as we disembarked when s the next train back to the states even so records show that eighty five per cent ot of all the men that have ever joined the company since its arrival at an delope springs have remained at least one full term I 1 furthermore burther urther more there are more than a few who are proud to point to their record and like falnes hines say I 1 too knew it W when hen which brings us to the matter of personal statistics hines has not been a member of this company as long as berryhill Berry hlll hIlI although they are the only charter members left by charter members we mean anyone who belonged to the company prior to july 1 1937 owen hearn and Rod are the only other mem bers who came with the company from tupelo miss noone no one here was ever a member of the company when it was at ecru miss ray smith walker and davenport have the distinction of having been in the camp longer than their company has since they transferred from the camp at mayfield Mayti eld utah after the arrival of comparatively recent recruits were davis fears hoi hot and malloy in october 1938 we added galloway connor hag stette russell smith and fruge every state in the fourth corps area la Is now represented with the ex caption of north caro ina the corn com pany is now made up of 24 enrollees from alabama 24 from florida 55 from georgia 16 15 from louisiana 16 from mississippi IS 18 from south carolina 10 from tennessee and 3 from utah the campany held a celebration on the in of our second anniversary in the pres ent location on the menus that we placed on each plate was a resume of the company a history since it was organized in may 1933 |
