Show GOLD HILL sose so se ITS STORY r X ire I 1 4 A 1 9 v M al 4 4 4 A 1 15 it I 1 4 A 1 n k v fal ia 1 4 tw w N YA fe ak 8 western wih topper op tr p e la gold H I 1 by GEORGE H SHORT lights milling ventures INDIAN profits from poison and wealth from a single handed gold min nin ing operation are some of 0 the color ful features in the history of 0 gold hill at the western end of 0 tooele thoele county utah officially the area Is the clifton mining district its metropolis Is a ghost town of about 30 in habitants miles west of salt lake city and 43 miles south of 0 wendover with which it Is con necked by rail prospectors h heading e a d I 1 n g toward california were intrigued by gold specimens in 1858 but it was not until 1809 9 that white men subdued the indians indiana and began real mining A district was organized in that year by 1880 some claims had been located of which about 50 being worked sporadically shipping being precluded by dis tance and poor roads smelting was undertaken dundei taken on a small scale in 1871 and 1872 the combined et ef forts torts of the promoters tors resulted in the le ie covery of a it few hundred tons of lead bullion containing silver from 1877 little was doing in the new camp until 1892 when col J P F woodman with a fortune made at came looking tor for gold acquiring the cane sa s1 S rings and alvarado groups he lie installed a small amalgamating mill with an average recovery of 10 a ton the mill saved in tour four years it Is re ported about woodman a death in 1897 halted operations the copper boom of 1905 focused attention on the red metal oata n ing several properties near gold hill duncan macvichie MacVl chie hIe and asso elates clates organized the we tern utah copper co sank a foot shift and procured the building of the railroad branch from bendove when the boom subsided only tons of copper ore had been shipped and the company was glad to sell its mine to frank rowley a textile manufacturer of rhode island ignoring copper rowley went after an arsen c ore then in great demand to sup press a boll weevil invasion of the cotton fields this paid well while the boll weevil lasted more ar was developed in a property owned by jacob gerster its sale brought him 50 the claims passed eventually to the united states smelting refining mining co arsenic ceased to be profitable but silver gold and lead in the shipments were more encouraging and may cause the property now idle to be worked gain by the smelting company smaller but more remunerative were the operations of lettler leffler palmer in a little gold mine known as the rube near gold hill palmer discovered it himself after his return ti fi om the world war and by himself picked gold from a seam that wis to bring him a small fortune it was spoken of as the one man mine the slow ly filled cars brought palmer about 8 each from the smelter over a period of several years he Is said to have extracted about in gold at a total expense of 22 in 1933 mr palmer accepted the bid of a los angeles moving picture actor tor for the rube an ali at tempt to increase production by widening the cut diluted the ore to such an extent that deficits re placed profits and the mine was closed down the cane springs mine idle after the death of col woodman was leased in 1931 by salt lake city operators for two years the operation was carried on with sue cess approximately 2000 tons of ore of an average value of 10 78 per ton was shipped to a salt lake smelter As depth increased heavley machinery was needed A new york syndicate vas ras interested and formed a company to take over the lease and option water and other troubles made the work un profitable and led to the failure of the company the cane springs has since been idle the recorded production of the gold hill region up to 1930 has been ore tons gold ounces 20 silver ounces copper pounds 3 lead pounds 8 zinc pounds 16 arsenic tons 75 value dollars 2952 it is evident that a gross miner al production of around 3 is not a great contribution to the state a economic importance never the region has given em to many people at times as many as men and it has supported a few people at all times in the writer a opinion the ar deposits are able to supply a very large tonnage of ores it and when there la Is a market tor for ar settle the gold deposits are num erous though comparatively small and these can be developed into profitable small scale seale operations that will last tor for many years |
