committee ee has not yet been appoint rd ed and it will be about the first of the week before any applications can be sent out following are a few of th the regulations governing the seed loans each individual who obtains a loan for crop production in 1932 must give an absolute absolu tN first lien on all crops growing or to be grown by him in 1932 in such form as to entitle it to tiling filing in the county in which he resides the largest amount which can be loaned to an individual is the amount loaned will be based on the requirements of the ap tor for seed fertilizer feed for work stock fuel and oil tor for tractors other necessary supplies and on the acreage of crops on which he gives a crop lien to sec secure re the payment ot of the loan made to him loans will be made in no case in excess of 3 per acre on general tiled filed crops and not in excess of 12 per acre on truck crops including p po 0 tato s the application must state specifically the purposes tor for which the proceeds of the loan are to be us ed it if the applicant tor for the loan is a tenant or is farming land under con tract tor for de 11 or so called crop con tract or has given a prior mortgage on his 1932 crop he must secure the waivers of the actual owners of the land his landlord andor all prior mortgage holders the mortgage or lien contains pro vis on authorizing the secretary of agriculture through an agent besig bated by him in the event the aepli cant tails falls to protect or at the proper time to harvest the crop mortgaged to enter upon the premises and bar har vest the same and to sell the crop to satisfy the lien of said mortgage and expenses incurred from the proe eds of the crop interest at the rate ot of 5 per cent will be charged on all loans the not es are due and payable november Nove moer niner 30 1932 or sooner it the crops covered by the mortgage are sold prior to that date 4 quimpo destroy annually in millard county a tremendous amount of forage which should be utilized tor for ou on livestock they are pot difficult to poison and the tact fact that we have so many with us all the time indicates that we are In differ ent to the loses that are going on annually A very tittle effort with properly mixed ed oats will rid an area of these pests there is one difficulty that should be over come in most of our sections when ever quimpo are destroyed in one maits field and his neighbor neighbors s field Is still infected these pests will ml grate from one place and occupy the des desert ertol Pl holes on the other farmer s land it is therefore very necessary that the tight fight of extermination be carried on over quite an extended area the U S biological survey and state department of agriculture and the extension service are ready to cooperate with all of the farmers who desire to put on such a cam poisoned oats should not be put ut oat too early in the spring th arst first s that come out are males these are followed ten day or two weeks later by the fib females males and the ast last to come out are the young of the previous year it if the poison Is put put too early only those that come out first will have access to it and considerable more work will result quimpo will take the poison just as well when the alfalfa is two inches high as they will jwill in the early spring anong the best friend ot of the farmers in millard county are the numerous hawks we see soaring about our fields A great many peo pee pie have the idea that these hawks are destructive and therefore should be destroyed numerous evidence of killing ot of hawks is to bo seen along long the main highways where the remains of the killed birds are lying these birds do a tremendous amount of good in I 1 beeping down rodents and insects U I 1 particularly field mice and d grass hoppers there are only two destruct he haaks in millard county these are the cooper s hawk and the sharp shinned haak haw k and these are very rarely killed because ot of the fact that they are swift flyers and it Is very difficult to get a shot at them all of the extremely large hawks and the small sparrow hawks should be protected protect Pd the two that should be destroyed are medium sized are ex swift flyers and never soar these are the ones that catch young pheasants chickens and birds II 11 your are not absolutely sure about the identity of a hawk don t shoot it CORN most of the experts an feeding place the value of corn silage as from 40 to 50 per cent as valuable as a ton of alfalfa hay with this in mind this crop has proved a very valuable one during the past amo years tor for millard co ty A few years ago it was necess ary to build a very expensive cement silo in order to cure the corn properly however this practice has given way to a very much more economical one of curing the corn in trenches about fifty of these trench silos were tried out very satisfactorily last year and practically every man who used the silage this year Is very firm in its praise yields last year on the thes best corn patches ran as high as 18 tons per acre this gives a very inre re amount of excellent teed feed tor for winter use to replace alfalfa hay the two in most ost efficient c corns orns that were used last year were white flint and early bellow lellow dent this latter being a development of the famous minnesota 13 this yellow cornias been grown in millard county tor for a number of years and Is acclimated and matures almost aa as early as the theo white flint every farm ra where here live stock are fed should consider very seriously planting corn as part of the crop rotation system |
