Show THE COUNTY AGENTS COLUMN B MORGAN P mckay TRENCH SILOS ILOS now Is the time during the slack season to begin the construction of that trench ilo every farm where any feeding is done should take ad vantage of its opportunities by plant ing enough corn to till fill a silo to take care of what livestock its owner has during the winter the pr advantages 0 of f the trench silo over the pit or the up right silo is the cost of construction and the ease with which the trench silo can be filled and the silage fed practically all iciest of construction construct ioA s eliminated outside of a f few evo days labor repair and depreciation cost are largely eliminated less eapen sive si ve machinery is necessary for till fill ing them than is required for over head silos it is easier to teed feed from the trench silo t an either of the oth er types the cost of packing is ia also reduced because livestock can be us ed to 0 lo 10 o the tramping the principal disadvantages are blat tl at it requires a better covering c nd e ea 1 ec al care in packing to the silage aiom ling unless lined they aie ale not as permanent as the other types however these are of minor consequence compared to the advantages that I 1 have mention ted ed here wherever the soil Is of a torture so that the walls do not read ily lly ci u untie lil le away they may be used tor for a number of years with very lit tie tle repair in cases where the soil does not permit of build ng 0 one no of these silos a thin coat of plaster might be applied reinforced by net wire of some kind and thus make a very permanent trench silo ft fe years to come IRO the broadcasts tor for the coming week over from 1 45 p to in to 2 00 p m will be on june 14 r J pae be craft talking on of graz tog ng to floods and on june 16 P F AT coe will talk on bigger and better fruit DIVI RILING dairying in the united states Is at the lowest ebb it has been tor for man many years and the prospects tor for immediate recovery are not very bright however dairying always has and always will be linked up as a very nery vital part of agriculture ev en under presents conditions the dairy sections are in better shape fi ally than any other farming sec see eions the advice generally from dairy ey experts in the country Is that no increase should be made in dairy ing however millard county Is way below belov the average of other farming sections in dairy dair production ov in to our ideal location in regard to market and teed feed conditions we have ample room yet tor for a great deal of expansion along this line every farm should have its dairy unit sut suf focient good producing coc cows to eat up a good portion of the hay and the grain produced on those farms at the present time a great many farms have a sufficient number of cows but they are not of sufficient quality to justify just ty its existence any cow that does not produce ibs lbs of butterfat per ye year ar should be culled from the dairy herd even the best cows today are barely paying their teed feed costs and the poorer ones are running milked into debt every day they are there are a number of suggestions that may be offered toward the im provement pro of our dairy herds in millard county 1 I 1 every herd should be tested tor for contagious abor tion at the agricultural college in logan a laboratory has been set up where blood samples may be sent tor for testing tree free of charge the college will the vials tor for the blood sample and the only cost attached to the test Is the sampling that Is the taking of the blood sample and that can be done at a very nominal cost see your local veterinarian and have this attended to as oon eon as pos sible 2 arrangements are now being made for all those who wish to cooperate to have their cows test ed once every two months tor for butter tat fat production this must be accoo panted of course by accurate weigh ing night and morning at the time the sample is in order to corn com the production over that period such a sixty day test it if taken con coon over a period of a year will check on the give a iery accurate production of any cow the bureau of animal industry says that it will be within 2 to 5 per cent of an ottic off ic lal test 3 cows which are to be bloaters and which are not paying tor their feed should be out and disposed of 0 owing to the ex low price of beef at the pres ent time this is not very profitable but it would be cheaper to sell them even at this low price than to go on feeding them 4 the best a UY to merove 0 any dairy herd is thru the use of good bulls even at the pres nt zit low price of registered bulls from good producing dams it is too er pensive for the maa man with a small mail aard to invest in and keep one for continued on back page COUNTI AGENTS COLUM CONTINUED his own use this difficulty is ov arcome by the formation of bull as by this means several farmers owning a suit chent number of cows in the same get to gether and purchase a very excellent bull the same thing may be done in another locality adjacent to the first group and so on in three or four other places when each group Is through with their herd bull they may exchange with one another so it df four associations were formed and four good bulls purchased at a very nominal cost to each farmer and ex changed at two year intervals tor for the price of 0 one bull each group could be supplied for eight years there are a number of localities in millard county where bull asso citations clat ciati lons ons could be formed and by so doing sp leniLa bulls could be pur chased and used with very little out lay tor for the individual farmer dairying may not reach tor for a good many years the good prices we have had in the past but inasmuch as the consumption of dairy products is in creasing every year along with our population dairying must continue as a vital part of our farming oper actions |
