Show LIFES afes SM LEAVES IMPRINT A browsing animal unwitting takes a step lons eons ago which causes great interest among men of science today long after the list survivor of that animal lias has disappeared arom the earth biggest footprint let found THE ROMANCE OF MINING A aej 4 tt ft 4 V t 4 or 4 P R ol 01 0 ap A WA aa this is a photo of the footprint of a dinosaur frozen by the ages into enduring stone this footprint weighs ibs lbs which will give a faint conception of the magnitude of the huge beast when alive this footprint taken out of the ceiling of a coal mine in utah but it was made when that coal was forming millions of years ago read the text of this interesting find photo by the courtesy of mr C N strevell mr charles N strevell of salt city sent out to his friends the most unique card ol 01 the year mr veil vell Is a collector collect ur with no doubt the largest and best collection of fossils and indian relics relies privately owned in the state of utah and ol 01 greatest grea tesi importance in this valuable collect ion Is a series of 0 nine footprints of dinosaurs so this year at about christmas time he sent out to those of his friends aho v ho are similarly in te rested a magnificent photograph of a monster footprint 53 inches long 32 inches wide three toed and this one great footprint weighing pounds just think of what the entire creature must have tipped the beam at tor for one footprint done in rock to weight ibe lbs this imprint was found in the roof of the chesterfield mine at sego in grand county utah mr strevell has every reason to be justly proud 1 of it eminent men high in the ea es ti mation of the scientific world have examined this tine fine specimen and studied it al aalfs alks on a peat bog millions of years ago before man was when dense forests were grow ing on that part of utah now but barely sustaining a horned toad and a coyote and they both hungry rich ab luxuriant verdure giant trees and hosts of animals were living in corn com petition where now Is nothing but desolation aridity rocks upturned and ani only man man the uneasy delv ing below the surface tor for what oth ers era want there in that spot was a thick layer of fallen trunks turn tum bled in contusion confusion a sluggish stream mayhap meandering through it and out from that water huge ungainly monstrous beasts emerged to walk the shores and then slide into the my ater ter again which was more their M t than the land tor for some species on one of those edcur this huge beast walked over a coal bed forming when it was peat like sank in the footprint tilled filled with water and let us suppose a freshet brought down a load of mud in suspension tilled filled that imprint with the mud settling mother na ture busied busted herself her aielt and of the me life now extinct that one walk not even an incident in the great beasts life left a prized possession be fore which savants ponder weigh evidence and after thoughtful deliberation are able actually to pronounce the species of at the creature can call him Dino Magr aurill A signature of at the ages let lot us not ase that thread threadbare bara thought which has done so much ser vice as to have lost its once potency let us not repeat the phrase foot prints in the ands of time but rather let us search for an unused expression rich in imagery let us say the dinosaur left his imprint en on the stream of life As the great stream of S life flowed down the vale of years to blend with eternity this creature walked tor for a few brief steps on the shores thong ands of his fellows left nothing a meager few left their bones he carelessly sauntered unheeding mayhap with no other thought than to browse on a succulent leaf which his long neck could reach and in that vagrant act after eons of time rivets unknowingly men mens s attention to him his life his environment and his very hour fossils are tune time markers volumes have been written great names have blazoned in the sober halls of science the trend of thought in a generation was changed by the study of just such relics relies of the past As the geologist studies the past he slips a time marker in the record as a guide to future students and upon closer look we find that time marker which he used waa was a tos fog sil sill he correlates strata in the tor for matlon mation of a continent by the tau fau na 0 of that period the trilobite tor for the very early record near the hot bot torn tom the cephalopod the fish the amphibian then the saurian fant at say midway we find the dinosaur the stream of evolution has flow ed far from its source to arrive at that time marker it has flowed past a period where no fossil Is left to us the soft jelly like start and on the stream flowed to where a time marker says eyes organs but no internal skeleton then to the rudiments ot of such and lo 10 the crea ture takes to the air and then how the stream does dance and bound and jump no slow movement from then on fierce competition ani ant mal eat animal Is the stern corn com mand inand and none disobey A time marker comes in a little three toed like creature who grows when forests give way to aridity his hoofs hoots get hard he cabets oft off other toes and now walks on one and we say horse the time marker named him when his funch tiona were far from horse like suppose you were reading a big book and that about midway thru it I 1 was a book mark let us say in the form of this photograph lot of thel the footprint it would be a aimel time marker then ot of the age ot of the dl but turn the pages over rapidly tor for this purpose to nearly the last chapter and close to the end of the record we find a cespon sible thinking masterful creature dominating the whole at of creation that last named animal Is MAN man who delves in mines in trans por in forces who anniti lates time and space who bridges distance as fast as thought who digs coal that you and I 1 may be warmed in this winter weather wherein 1 I write and in the root roof of the mine in which heat had been anciently imprisoned now available to man there Is found this marker this im fin print on the shores of the stream of life which marked the time in that current of life forces when lived the huge dinosaur the armance R nance of it all that and more Is read from the photograph scantily I 1 la it writ here but those who delve deeply in that lore make the page brilliant with interest as fascinating as eer e er story was penned the story of how man was brought down the stream of time long after a time marker said here lived a dino this la Is part of the romance mr strevell must enjoy in mining coal frank beckwith sr |
