Show RUMBLINGS OF AT ibapah utah february 22 1931 mr prank frank beckwith delta utah dear mr beckwith have been receiving the chron icle very regularly and enjoy the many interesting stories and eclen articles as well as the newa news from home have noticed your comments in the last few copies about the rumblings of the moun talus during the winter months I 1 have heard this or some other sound at different intervals ever since I 1 have been in thia this part of the country from here near ibapah the sound bound seems to come from the southwest or from toward ely and most of the people seem to toi think it Is the blasting in and around the pit at ruth nevada the reports vary in intensity for sometimes each individual report Is lahara and quick like that of blast ing and at other times it is more of a deep AND PROLONGED RUM BLE that lasts with lout a break tor for ALMOST HALF A MINUTE the first time that I 1 remember hearing this sound wlas was when frank law and I 1 went deer hunting out on mountain about eight years ago we arrived at swazey springs late at night and as the place was stege inge to us we did not take time to hunt a place to put our bed but each of us took some quilts and he curled up in the front seat of the car and I 1 bolok the back seat and we went to sl slop op some time in the night it let loose and woke us up right now coming out of a sound sleep we did not ihnow whether it was the end of the world or just an earthquake it was so hard that I 1 imagined it hook shook the car and I 1 still believe it did we heard it several times more during the few days we were there AND IT WAS VERY LOUD AND DISTINCT I 1 have heard it ft at several points between here and delta it Is very plain from drum mountain I 1 won der it that ia is how drum got its name from the drum beats below so plainly heard from a single sta catto note to a latag continued roll like distant thunder 9 and also I 1 have heard it from the east side of fish springs mountain and from callao calla and from the near gold hill and from each and all of those places the sound seems to come from or southwest wednesday february felt Is writing thie this piecemeal a hunk at a time heard the rumblings twice day before yesterday at 10 30 a in and again at 12 30 and both times they were more like blasting before the echo or reverberations of one would die away another ifould start and each time they last ed ALMOST HALF A MINUTE never noticed them yesterday but heard it once to day about 2 15 p in and although there were distinct reverberations prolonged it was more run together into one long rumble do you know of any one who has i heard it from the west side of swa zey or sawtooth mountain notch peak and could they tell it if it came from toward the the east that is boom toward the mountain 9 here are some ways r suggest to trace the rumble down to its source i at least they might help write to some one responsible person in each of the several towns about sev enty five or a hundred miles from ely and ask them it if they can hear the blasting toward ely and if they can then ask them during a tain week to record the daya days and hours of the day that they hear this and send the records to you and also get man in charge of the ruth pit to record the time that they blast during the same week and send the record to you then you can compare them and see it they agree this same week have some one on the house or cloose to it on the east cast side miners outlying ranchers or others in that vicinity recording too and then you would have it from both sides and from many angles and no doubt ba be able to confine the phenomenon th t its origin it if the other lecorps agree with the house range records then it might be the blasting at ruth but it if they do not eo so agree then it Is probably a local disturbance in the foundations of the houes range another way wat to find out about it would be to puit put a on the house range or to the west ot f it and it would record the mate distance of the disturbance from the instrument as well as its direction the vibrations seem to be more violent on swazey mountain than at any lofther other place I 1 heave heard them and J believe if they do not binate in the house range then that range must be connected with the or agin by a large fault line or rock strata that carries the vibrations more freely than the rock or soil at other point points what felt says there appeals to me very much FB sr if it is really an earth movement or growing pains of a mountain then it Is nothing more than MINIA TURE earthquakes now harm less ess and more or less continuous sequentially that Is oft recurring if soi so that Is a natural phenomena and something wonderful and we should advertise it as locq o 0 of 0 the nat ural wonders of millard county very truly yours felt P robison thanks felt very much that is the nicest presentation we have oseen on the subject and the letter raises many queries of a most inter esting nature we wish mish the govern ment or U of U would take interest and put a man ton ion the spot capable and equipped with the proper inspru ments to analyze the noises I 1 am sure it Is full of scientific interest a mountain with growing pains as felt says and grumbling corn com pla ining about it and trying to rid tid itself of its troubles by shaking them off it that isn t interesting what Is A mountain rising and groaning in travail vulcan a plied beneath it and suppose some day the piers break oft off and we turn tum ble down into the yawning p pit it J sizzle and try fry land and broil and of course some ot of you got it cold in so you d better mend your step right now I 1 thanks felt we invite i residents to write in and give us the their ki this most interesting
