uttered the words given at alove oe the scene was the senate chamber in the capitol at washington the orator was daniel Iv webster ebster and the occasion was nas the debate on a resolution of inquiry respect ing the sales and surveys of western vie tern lands introduced by senator foote of connecticut in december 1820 on jan uary nary 19 1830 senator hane of south carolina speaking on the resolution mide an attack upon the new england states alo ini 0 he declared wished to check the growth of U V e west in the interests of the protective pol pot cv webster felt that thit th s attack could not be left unanswered and the next day I 1 e replied to it but it was not until a week neck later january 26 1830 18 following anoil er attack hi bi bayne that he made the immortal speech knonk
