| Show INFECTED CHICKS SPREAD DISEASE tainted birds immediately become menace to others prepared by the united states department of 0 agriculture bacillary white also known as disease may spread from infected chicks to healthy chicks in the same incubator even though the chicks are not actually in contact the united states department of agrical ture announces in reporting progress in the study of the cure prevention and eradication of this serious disease drs hubert bunyea and W J hall have demonstrated the danger of this type of infection in investigations under way for two years at the bu reau of animal industry experiment station Beth seda md their work was part of a program of study form by the bureau and t the he national poultry council the committee in charge of these investigations consist ed of dra drs 11 dorset M I 1 A jull and H bunyea all of the bureau of ani ant mal industry the eggs used in the experiment came from two flocks one known to have the disease the other free from it as shown by the agglutination test separate trays for the two kinds of 0 eggs were used in the incubators and the chicks when hatched were prevented from coming in contact with those in the other trays in tour four dit dif ferent types of incubators it was found that disease was transmitted from infected chicks to normal chicks the infection ranged from 45 per cent in the still air tipe to 81 per cent in the agitated air type the control chicks hatched in sep arate incubators from eggs obtained from non reacting hens showed less than one tenth of one per cent infer tion in all cases the spread of the dis ease occurred within a period of from 18 to 24 hours after hatching alpar antly as a result of air circulation in no case did any of the chicks from one tray have direct contact with those in another tray deaths of healthy chicks exposed to the disease showed that even when ta the le chicks were brooded under the roost most favor able conditions a large percentage died within two weeks as a result of the infection the experiment slowed sl owed tl at from the moment it comes out of the shell an infected chick immediately becomes a menace to all other chicks in the same incubator an infected chick Is also a menace when placed in a brooder with healthy chicks incubators for ducks Is now common method the desire to incubate their own eggs has been bred out of many strains of ducks duels particularly the pe kin for this reas reason on the e egg 9 must be hatched in incubators or under hens duck eggs should be gathered dally kept in a cool place and tut turned ned dally they should be set as soon as ble after laying as they do not keep as well as hens eggs in incubating duck eggs artificially they are handled about the same as hens eggs except that the tempera ture should be held at fit degrees tor for the first three weeks and more ture supplied in the machine they may be tested for fertility on the fourth or fifth day dont waste sunshine needed by chickens even it if you are feeding cod liver oil and have substitute glass in the windows dont waste any pure raw sunshine when you have a chance to use it on the chicks be willing to open the windows and doors on still sunny days then watch the weather and close them up when clouds and raw winds appear let the chicks en joy the warmth of pure raw sunshine whenever possible A little extra work in caring for the windows and the venti ventilating latin g system will be repaid in the improved v vigor igor of the chicks eradicating lice for erad eating lice from poultry use sodium fluoride it kills all varle ties of lice body head and feather this chemical may be applied by dust ing or by dippl dipping either the chem leally pure or the commercial grades may be used but the latter Is cheaper and more easily obtained young chicks require very little e and a pound of powder costing about 50 cents should kill the lice on a flock of chickens dipping the fowls la Is still easier and cheaper clean ground best the chief of the coultry section of the iowa experimental station says even enen though the old birds show no signs of Infect infection io n it Is 1 not safe to allow allon boung oung birds even to have haie access to tl ti e same yards runs or gro ground unit where old did stock have been try getting the 19 1030 10 chicks on clean ground entirely away from the old birds infection can be easily carried on tl e shoes by old stock and in nan other wais prevention entson I 1 Is s al at as the best cure |
