have ills his communication for or this particular issue inasmuch as lie he has just arrived in utah and his in many any friends here are hoping thit that he m may find time for a brief visit in fit fillmore UNITED STATES SENATE august 16 1939 al mr r vance wilson editor millard county progress fillmore utah my dear friend I 1 hope you will forgive me tor for my delay in replying to your letter this session of congress has made very heavy demands upon my time and it has been impossible tor for me to answer all of the communications which have come to my desk your letter not only brings memories of my boyhood days but the names and faces of the tine fine men and women who established and built the first capital of utah I 1 have often said that I 1 have never known better people than those with whom I 1 had the joy and pleasure of associating in my boyhood days many of them were not only pioneers themselves but the descendants of pioneers and there came to fillmore in its formative period men and women of great character courage and integrity from other lands among the founders of fillmore cinq were men and women from the british isles and from the scandinavian countries they were bound together by religious ties and a spirit of comrad ship which made tor for spiritual unity and with courage and abil ability ity they undertook the task of reclaiming the deserts and building a commonwealth they possessed high ideals arid and those convictions wh which tell developed strong characters they believed that a divine providence was watching over them and that they were instruments in ills hands of teaching and expounding the principles of peace and justice and righteousness which ultimately were to prevail in all the world in other words they believed that they had a mission to perform to expound the truth and to spread the gospel of salvation and to prepare the world for the advent of the saviour of 0 mankind persons animated by such views calinet be otherwise than strong and forceful characters no matter lu in what part of the world they may be placed notwithstanding their spiritual qualities and their belief that they were advance messengers of a glorious period they were practical and addressed themselves with great courage courage to the arduous tasks connected with the work of pioneers they were interested in fit education and established schools in order to know the truths of science and to absorb the better forms of culture and art existing in the world they provided a structure for or the capitol of the territory and houses of worship and buildings tor for public schools they encouraged the arts and made sacrifices to bring brine into their homes and into their lives whatever would contribute to their intellectual and spiritual advancement if space permitted I 1 should be glad to leter to some of these noble men and women to whom I 1 have so imperfectly referred I 1 knew as a boy all of the noble men arid and women who were residents of fillmore I 1 should like to give the names of all together with tile the impressions which they made upon me as a boy I 1 submit however the names of a few of those great characters thomas C callister was an important ecclesiastical and spiritual leader uncle reuben as ne was lovingly called by young and old lie ho had passed through many trials in the early days ot of the church and demonstrated his fidelity to what he believed to bo be the truth chandler holbrook apparently stern ile he was a man ot of ability and an inflexible determination to meet the obligations testing resting upon him ira N hinckley a genuine pioneer a great leader arid and a true friend edward partridge a quiet sincere and courageous soul brother john kelly loved by all tor for his gentleness and nobility of 0 soul francis al lyman a strong and resolute character who subsequently became an apostle in the church hyrum mace alace a serious continued ou on page three SENATOR brunson zealous in his religious activities and ready tor for martyrdom for his faith alexander melville ever alert and watchful tor for the public good faithful in public as well as in religious responsibilities risi bill ties joseph V robison serious and profound student of the scriptures ancient and modern james starley an upright man in whom there was no guile joseph S giles who sacrificed much tor for his falth faith and who sacrificed himself tor for the good of all lie ile was legal adviser surveyor doctor and a friend to everyone brother bortle who had left scotland to join the followers of what he believed to be the revealed faith in building the kingdom of righteousness john ashman one of the kindliest kind liest and most faithful souls whose name will never be erased front from memory allen alien russel rugged and sincere a religious man in all that that term implies broin all that that term implies brother day firm and unyielding in his faith who together with his family constituted an important addition to the community josiah F gibbs a man of great intellectuality a writer of ability and a geo geologist logis of note brother beauregard a strong and vigorous character respected by all abraham carling Carll ng a modest man given to serious thought and righteous deeds brot h her e r powell a unique character filled with faith and vision of a day when the saviour would reign on earth may I 1 mention thomas R king my grandfather he had associated with joseph smith in ohio and illinois he and anson call and a few others were the first settlers in fillmore andrew henry one of the first irishmen to become a member of the church he was with those who were driven from nauvoo nathaniel baldwin a man of faith and determination serious and uncomplaining without deviation from the path of duty there are others whose names I 1 should like to mention dorius warner james rowley christian hansen ova peterson Pet eison gabriel briel huntsman joseph E ray william ray john cooper willard rogers dr north john trimble charles frampton L R cropper and almon robison the names abovementioned above mentioned constitute but a part of the page of memoir upon which is indelibly imprinted those whom I 1 knew admired and loved as a boy I 1 wish it were possible for me to meet again in the near future those who are still living and I 1 hope there
