Show throngs attend stake conference at kanosh sunday elder joseph F merrill was the principal speaker elder joseph F P merrill Merrl ll a member ot of the quorum of the twelve apostles was the visiting speaker at al the priesthood conference held at kanosh sunday lie ile spoke at three meetings the priesthood officers meeting at 8 a m and the two general sessions at 10 and 2 pm during one of his addresses lie he explained the campaign which the L D S church is carrying on against the use of liquor and tobacco particularly ticul arly among the niem members ers of the priesthood ile he cited the cost ot of the campaign then their gave authentic figures showing that in this state last year ten million dollars in round numbers was spent for hard liquors and cigarettes adding the amount that was wag spent tor for beer and all other forms of tobacco this figure was increased to approximately lie he compared this to the appropriation bill which was passed by the last legislature which calls for the expenditure of something over as for operating the various stata otate institutions during the ensuing two years thus there is spent in this state about three and one halt half times as much tor for liquors and tobacco as Is spent annually for the operation of our state government and institutions also speaking at the 10 a m meeting were prin pran S 11 spencer who related several faith promoting stories erwin L sheffield spoke on iclal sc Is lal activities and projects ot of the priesthood r e th quorum particularly as to the church welfare program gram ellsworth brunson stake clerk discussed the responsibilities ot of those who hold the priesthood president arthur C brown presided at til all the meetings and was a speaker at the first general session lloyd rogers was sustained as bishop ot of the kanosh ward with grant staples and charles christensen as his councillors bishop preal george and his councillors bete given an honorable le ie lease from the positions they have held tot so many years preal george orvil E Deck beckstrand strand and leon R E dobson were sustained as members ot of the high council the speakers at the two meeting were mr G george eorge mr beckstrand and mr air dobson the three who were sustained as high councilmen in the morning also speaking were three members of the priesthood who discussed the following topics harold miller scipio a deacon how quorum activities have increased my interest in religion frank barney kanosh a teacher why I 1 prize and honor my priesthood calling and grant davies fillmore a priest responsibility ot of those who hold the priesthood priesthood elder merrill occupied the rest of the time at the afternoon meeting music for the conference was furnished by the kanosh ward ch choir oar under the direction of mrs grace staples the members of the choir and mrs airs staples were complimented on the beautiful music they had prepared for or the occasion scout comit of honor and music alusic festival held during evening in the evening a scout court of honor was held at which pres T dark clark callister Cal llster presented awards to the following scouts bud huff eagle scout which is the highest rank in scouting calvin bartholomew grant callister thom delved rel ved the same awards tw h and son harold rece aved other scouting awards following the court of honor the stake presented their music alusic festival with grant thompson stake president of the Y al at 1 I A presiding the theme of 0 this program was an evening with our sac rod red music and there were many beautiful numbers rendered by choruses and a stake choir mrs rachel brunson Is stake music director and the program was prepared under her direction the conference was very well attended the hall being tilled filled at every meeting |
