Show an appeal to hunters mr wilson the editor of the progress let me read an article lie had written pertaining to the deer hunt in ill tilts tills section I 1 appreciate mr air wilsons Wll WIl sons fairness in giving me this opportunity to present the side of the local fish arid and game association it shows that lle he has a gen genuine generine trine litte terest rest in the betterment of bun hunting ting conditions arid and wants to see all sides ut of tile the question discussed I 1 thank him tor for publishing this article the primary purpose of this or 01 Is to promote the best interests of fish arid and game came arid and the people who hunt arid and fish the mern members bers are sincere in their efforts to improve hunting and fishing conditions and to provide recreation tor for as many people as possible it Is their desire to see hunting condition continue to be such that it will all be a pleasure to follow tills this sport they believe that this desire may be best accomplished by cooperation with the state fish and game department part ment rather than by blindly opposing tills this department the main criticism of the fish fiah and game association and the state fish and game department is in connection with the coming doe hunt this limit hunt was ordered by the board for big game control of which the state game commissioner is only one member but the state game de pait ment and the local club are receiving the entire criticism personally so nally I 1 do not mind being critt cased I 1 believe that piat the more this tiling thing Is stirred up tip the better belter it will y be for all concerned provided that tho those ae who are doing the talking are si arid and will be consistent Const stent nt mr wilsons Wil sons article and I 1 am sure that lie Is expressing the things that anyone may hear on oil the streets ln in tini atos that many of the local hunters feel that they will be justified in aiding the slaughter about which lie speaks tills this attitude is certainly not consistent in the men alio p pre re mid to lie be so BO outraged over the hunt I 1 taking place lot let me say here that the local club does not arid and never did approve of the method adopted tor for taking the surplus deer they do however feel that there are too many deer for our winter inter arid and spring ranie range and that it if some of these leer are not removed there is danger of losing a great many more through starvation and disease locally there is a difference of opinion as to the condition of the range some settle men will tell you that there are now too many deer tor for the range while tille others insist that this Is not the case each individual thinks his opinion is as good as that of hii hl i neighbor witt with tills this feeling I 1 havo have no argument however the IT 11 S forest service has its range experts cx tile the state fish and came department part ment has its range experts and when these men make an air investigation and report that the deer are aie becoming too numerous people should give the matter some consideration who is most likely to know the actual condition of the range the man who has made it a life study and liis ins looked the range over with the idea of studying the forage or the man mail who runs a business in town and goes on the range iange only a few times dining the season answer tills this question to your own satisfaction the following is taken front from a letter front from the state fish and game came department to the local club Put pursuant to your request tor for lit in forni formation for maton aton as to why the doe season in your locality we ne are pleased to give you the following first practically the entire deer winter range front from north of lloyden 13 y ty to dog valley Is ove stocked during even a sum normal winter such as the elie last one when heavy snows cause heavier concentration loss Is sure to result it if numbers of deers are arc permitted to become greater second an over grazed condition always results in erosion sometimes to tho the point that human life Is endangered dang ered by floods while we are not convinced that game alono alone brings about tills this condition they will un doubt odly act as a contributing factor facter third it is a known fact that too heavy concentration of game birds or animals Is conducive to ills dis fase ase f and parasites which once started rapidly spreads until there Is danger of losing not only the game found concentrated but also that over a large territory Foil Pot rth irth decrease in size and continued on back page AN APPEAL TO HUNTERS continued front roni page one weight of deer Is definitely assoria led with poor range ranee conditions at one season of the year or another and especially where up too closely is necessary these are the principal reasons briefly stated tor for your doe season As you will note this is in the interest of game themselves it seems unwise not to harvest game for consumption but to sacrifice it because of 0 these statements show the attitude tude ot of the state fish and game de in tile the matter alter ol of the doe limit hunt I 1 believe they are sincere n their desire to act only in the best beat interests of game and therefore urge that local hunters take it upon themselves to help uphold the law even though they feet feel that a mistake has been made because if more than tile the allotted number of deer are taken it will be local hunters who suffer for it in future hunting seasons the opinion also prevails that most of these 1000 does will be ta ken front from tile the immediate vicinity ot of fillmore the territory from which they ate aie to be taken is over fifty miles long arid and varies from about file to about fifteen miles in width there ate aie to be does taken from the fillmore acca aiea this is not in an excessive number tor for the amount of territory arid and it if local hunters will take the right attitude in trying to prevent illegal shooting the deer herd bill ft ill not be greatly hurt to mr wilsons Wil sons statements regarding tile political augle angle I 1 have nothing to say except that my purpose in ili writing this article la is to try to further the cause of better hunting arid and fishing arid and the further it can be removed front from politics the better it will be for sportsmen spoils men and I 1 think tor for the politician as well I 1 would like to appeal to all people who hunt or rish to consider this matter with an open mind investigate and find out what happened to tile deer in fit kaibab forest when allen they became too numerous tor for their range talk with forest officials and men who have ridden this range for many years if you are really interested in it better hunting arid and still believe that the taking of does Is wrong why not try to pr protect them as much as possible arid and not encourage other people to kill them recklessly I 1 invite anyone interested in ili fish and game to join the east millard fish arid and game association it you feel that the association has been and still Is wrong we invite you to join arid and help correct the mistakes muth much moie can be accomplished by together than by standing back and offering ott ering postmortem post mortem criticism it if you feel that the association is so far wrong that you cannot join it I 1 suggest that you form a new organization to work in tile the interest ot of better hunting and fishing bt cause in ili spite of 0 our differences of opinion I 1 believe all of the hunters are interested in attaining ta the e same goal better n aler fishing arid and hunting bunting for millard county signed otis oils Pies president ident east mallard fish game came
