Show STATEMENT ON BRAIN FEVER IN HORSES ia s by dr W H hendricks state veterinarian during the summer of 0 1937 wt we expel lone fenced d an outbreak of in horses la in utah millard sanpete and sever cou courties Aties this outbreak developed into greater proportions in the south end 0 of utah county and in millard county A few scattered cases were found in juab sanpete and sevier conales cont les judging from our past experience with this disease in other parts of the state and in other states wo we may anticipate another outbreak ot of the he disease during the summer of 0 1938 particularly in the counties a bove mentioned we may possibly escape e a severe outbreak ot of the disease but we havo reason to believe that the number ot eases cases last year probably aa was sufficient to infect the territory where these eases cases occurred and that probably this year we might expect new outbreaks we may also expect outbreaks in territories where it did not occur in 1937 usually in the pail these have developed about the middle of july there may be a few cases that have deve developer lopea earlier than that weather ondi eions may have some affect on it and it Is possible we could have cases develop earlier than that this season we hope that we will be able to escape outbreaks of the disease this summer but it is my opinion that we should do what we can to prepare ourselves to handle the disease it if it should develop and possibly prevent its appearance if we can the experience peri ence of this state and other states during past outbreaks has been taken into consideration we have used two biologic products in an ail effort to treat and to prevent this disease these products are antl anti encephalomyelitis serum and normol killed vaccine the serum has only given protection tor for a short period of time probably 10 to 14 days A few horses that were inoculated with serum later developed the disease and so we feel that the protection afforded from tile the use of tile the serum was not sufficient to justify the expense on oil the other hand the use of if tin killed vaccine has evidently given us a very high degree of protection tec tion the cases that were macei bated with vaccine did not later develop the disease with respect to handling nn an outbreak in case one should develop this summer or with respect to taking any measures to protect horses from the di disease gease I 1 think that we can make tho following statement it is our opinion based on past experience that the antl anti encephala serum should not be used but we do state that in cases where farmers wish to protect their horses against the development of 0 the disease that the best product we can recommend Is the killed tissue vaccine this vaccine should be administered by a graduate licensed veterinarian it should be administered at least thirty 30 days be foi foie e the usual outbreaks of the disease s 3 appear in the past tile the di disease disease has appeared around the middle ot of july it is our recommendation therefore that any farmer who wishes to have his horses vaccinated vaccina ted consult his veterinarian who will have the necessary information with respect ct to vaccination and that ho he arrange to have the vaccinating done in maj ma or early june vaccine is probably the safest product that wo we have available for pie tentative venta tive purposes and inasmuch as 19 ve e have had bad no ill effects from its use and have leason to believe that vo e have had considerable protection in cases where whee e it has been used we feel that we ne are safe in advising that anyone who wishes to do anything to try to prevent his animals from getting the disease that they make arrangements tor for this vaccination iroc eduie any information with respect to the disease or the use of the vaccine will be given by the veterinarians or by the state department of agriculture |
