Show KEYNOTERS how JOW I many of us recall the key 11 note speech of senator at the republican national convention in cleveland this year or that of senator barkley at the philadelphia gathering of democrats the answers to that one fortify the fact that keynote speeches fade rapidly then die as completely as an ancient mackerel the only one which persevered through a campaign w was as delivered at the democratic convention of 1916 and later events made a farce out of it that keynote was delivered in favor of woodrow wilson the man who voiced it was martin H glynn of new york like the three long years which republicans emphasized in 1936 glenns keynote beat the tom toms for wilsons Wil sons achievements in avoiding war in 1914 1915 and 1916 ending each recital with the assertion ser tion but we go to war seizing upon the then catchy phrase which set convention delegates on their ears the democratic national committee made the race on the slogan of he r pt us out of war it barely lasted to reelect re elect wilson for two months after beginning his second term the united states was in the war success of a keynote in this particular instance was made at least partially possible by the pussyfooting tactics of the rival party they want to discuss the war but the american voters were talking about nothing else one other keynote has found a place in our permanent political history it was delivered by im imposing albert J beveridge of indiana at the bull moose convention of 1912 which brought theodore roosevelt back into the spotlight said beveridge the peoples government has been usurped by the invisible government and the peoples government must be g given i ven back to the people again even today with history recording in a bull moose defeat there is something about this well turned phrase which accounts for the perpetuity which has fallen to it Q western union |
