Show r aia rs HOW BEAVER COUNTY STARTED UTAH MINING fa r horn silver mine X 4 at frisco ufah ax 1 41 14 1 1 1 al by HARRY A THOMPSON T was in n beaver county that the IT first metal mine in utah VMS discovered the find was maile made in 1851 seven years alter after the mormon pioneers arrived it was largely accidental the pioneers were not looking tor for nines mines but where mineral was so obvious it could not be ignored from that day to this its metals have made beaver one ot of the most interesting tec iee eions of 0 the state it has gold silver lead copper zinc rain min 41 canese bismuth and numerous rare minerals with unpronounceable names the first mine was started end and the first smelting smelling sm elting furnace 0 operand near the present site of 0 I 1 miners rs ville valle by 1920 no fewer than 15 mining districts had been organized and the name ot of its greatest hiie had been heard around the world the original mine the lincoln or rollins mas as found by isaic grundy light eight to twelve feet tet of 0 lead silver ore was waa exposed at ahe he surface grundy and his parin rs built a crude smelter and furnished furnie lidl lead for or bullets and other simple purposes the furnace soon I 1 as abandoned but the mine was wai ol 01 ar abed intermittently and still eh ar ps ore in 1875 the opening ot of tho the ii rn irn ti silver made beaver comaty the hie i w leading silver lead producer at t the i y state the output of oc this valo has bean computed at 50 million dol jfe ft lars jars found by three itinerant prospectors 15 miles west of 0 milord ord it was wa purchased tor for a few ew thousand by allen alien G campbell Cani dennis ryan matt blatt cullen and A byram and later sold bold by them to jay cooke a famous philadelphia hanker banker who had bad been reduced to poverty by the panic of 0 1873 cooke agreed to pay 5 million for or it and to Is secure a railroad its earnings and subsequent sale aale made him rich again riches niches of 0 horn silver gave a new impetus to prospecting in all parts ot of the county gold cold silver lead copper and zinc were discovered in combination or separately in different localities in 1859 long before the horn silver strike gold was mined in a series of 0 caves near the same metal has been produced with some success in the newton beaver lake and fortuna districts poor men found encouragement in the star district southwest of 0 milford where the deposits of 0 lead and silver exposed close to the surface were mined cheaply beaver also scored as a copper producer newhouse in the preuss district between 1905 and 1912 yielded pounds of 0 copper ounces ot of gold and ounces of 0 silver other beaver county mines in which copper occurs in commercial quantities are the 0 K in the beaver lake district and the old hickory in the hocky brocky district better prices and improved methods of concentration give hope for revival ot of copper production in these localities in recent years exploration and development have tended to con cen een in the vicinity ot of the horn silver evidence that the rich veins of 0 this mine reach out along the borders ot of a great uplift which broke through the sediment arles has induced the owners of 0 the king david and frisco silver lead to spend thousands ot of dollars in sinking and drifting at the king david six air mineralized veins striking toward the horn silver have been penetrated by a long crosscut to the north on the tool foot level ot of the main working shaft the most promising leads are being developed through a raise further west on the same zone within less than feet of the surface the frisco silver lead has opened shoots ot of high grado grade silver lead ore from which many shipments have been made to the smelters shelters sm elters the brec breccia cla or shear zone feet in length and BOO teet feed wide makes directly into the horn silver and apparently has secreted many veins and deposits of 0 pay ore in its fractures north and south of 0 the horn silver activity Is manifest in mines along a fault contact where the fault Is crossed by east west veins one of 0 these mines located in 1878 as the beavor carbonate and now known fc air ai r as the Quad metals Is credited with a total production ot of nearly a million dollars reduction ot of their ores has always been a problem to many ot of the mines of 0 beaver county the primitive lead furnace of isaac grundy was waa succeeded by a number ot of little smelters shelters sm elters whose charcoal kilns kalns served their turn until bettered railroad facilities Is made transportation to the large central smelt eries erles practicable frisco at I 1 one time had two smelters shelters sm elters which were operated when water was available at newhouse a 1000 ton mill reduced the low grade copper ore to a concentrate during the th boom days 0 of the camp for each ounce of 0 sliver silver beaver has mined nearly 20 pounds of 0 lead figures on nonferrous non ferrous metal production front from 1860 to 1934 inclusive clu sive recoil the lead at 08 pounds and silver at ounces copper trails with and zinc with pounds gold cold in the same period was valued at the combined value ot of the live metals totals derived from 3 tons 0 of ore and concentrates in 1930 the beaver county districts earned production which virtually ceased d urine the long metal depression began to revive in 1935 higher prices in 1936 and 1937 stimulated activity and beaver having what it takes to make mines Is in the picture again |
