Show 1 I liec sto ck 1 Is i t it J a J los LOB angeles march 23 the fact act that the united states last year went through what was probably the most serious drouth condition in all history la is being brought home to tha th consumer all sorts ot of stories ar are being broadcast in respect to the shortage of meat and the rea resultant ultan t relatively higher high er prices than prevailed up until january but the fact act 0 of the matter Is that the 1934 drouth Is mainly responsible for or the meat shortage and it was only through desperate methods that tho the stockmen stoc kmen of the largest livestock producing states were able to save a portion of their locks flocks and her herds d s the result Is that from the ruinously low prices ot of the past three years livestock prices have made rapid advances and are now generally back to the 1931 levels but still tar far below the peak prices ot of 1928 and 1929 those livestock producers and feeders coders who are fortunate enough to have something to sell are getting good prices and aro are la in a measure recovering a portion ot of the losses suffered when prices were extremely low the tact fact ot of the matter la is that there enough meat to go around and those who feel eel that meat Is the essential part ot of tho the meal as most americans americana do feel must ar range their budgets to pay a relative ly higher price during the next year or so BO it Is too bad that there Is foolish talk of 0 boycotting meat because when anyone antono boycotts me meat t he la 18 hitting at the very foundation of american america n agriculture and the most essential industry of 0 the nation news from the tha great producing sections of the middle west is not encouraging the terrific lc d dust u a t storms reported during the put two weeks are arc taking tailing the top soil from some boma of 0 our most moat productive land and when the top soil la Is gone possibilities dosal bili ties of normal production on that land are erased instead of a land of burdensome surpluses of food for humans and feedstuffs fed feed stuffs tor for animals we are in groat great danger of being for cod ced to conserve what we have on ono one hand and make the land produce prod aw better and larger crops than heretofore it would bo be well tor for the retail meat dealers who are in dally daily contact with consumers to have a better understanding of the problems problem the livestock industry are facing it is a self evident and often proven tact fact that moat meat prices will never to go very tar far beyond the ability ot of the public to buy supply and demand will continue to establish prices the livestock producer Is going to continue to sell to the highest bidder and the consumer as always will atempa to buy as cheaply illi as possible under that a system y 9 tem pric prices ea will n never eye r go higher than the public Is able arul and willing to pay tor for what meat Is available |
