Show W I 1 livell ock bat sit a 11 4 a st S t I 1 U ajon L A e los angeles march 30 there is a distinctly better tone in the livestock markets than has been the case tor for months prices ot of both hogs and cattle have strengthened as Is evidenced by the tact fact that steers sold during the past week up to six cents a pound the highest price paid on the los angeles market since last december graan ted hogs sold up to a cwt cat the highest price since last october there la Is a definite feeling of optimism in the livestock markets bolstered by the belief that improvement in business industry and employment Is well under way clearing up and stabilization of the banking situation was undoubtedly the most important factor actor in restoring public confidence and stimulating credits and business generally to ray my mind it would be unfortunate it if the federal government should attempt to enact legislation to artificially fici ally boost farm and livestock prices no matter what sort of legislation Is enacted it means the addition of more government employees more government expense more taxes what Is really needed Is a general cutting down of government effort and lower taxes I 1 believe that the rank and tile file of farmers and stoc stockman kmen would bo be well content to be left alone and that relief measures should be limited to reduced taxes ot of all kinds and it practical lower interest rates we are tr a path strewn with fallu failures when we wa attempt to legislate bettor better prices the history ot of price stabilization efforts on the part dart of the federal farm board Is a history of failure and outright po longing ot of prices nothing will be ot of more assist assistance anEe to the producer than broader buying power which must come with improved business conditions along sound lines there Is no real hope for or improvement in agricultural commodity prices until the way is paved tor for greater employment and broader purchasing power I 1 in n the urban districts it seems too that our foreign markets should be opened up its as quickly as possible so that in some way we can be getting something back for or all the money wo have loaned loane d abroad the most effective relle relief f to farmers as well as all interests would be a more courageous atrit attitude ude towards tax reduction on the part of legislators in the states counties and 0 local o government govern governmental men tal units the natio national nal administration has shown that governmental ern mental costs cost can be cut and the attitude of the public generally illustrates that such action Is popular |
