Show STREETS webster says they are an open way for passage some people think of 0 them as the space in front of their homes upon which they must look and travel every line ime they go outside but it seems that most people think of them as a good handy dumping ground tor for all kinds of junk 10 and rubbish the pioneers ot of utah have been commended tor for their good judgment and foresight fore ore sight in laying out the towns with wide straight streets the praise would be justified it the present generation would do its part to make those streets what they were intended to be one glance however is sufficient to show that our streets are not what they were intended tor for take a walk around a typical block and observe the condition of the streets one particular block faces face main street and Is in the middle ot of town main alain street in this section is well kept it is clean along the entire block there are no trash heaps business men know better than to have such unsightly things as tree stumps rock piles ash heaps or piles of 0 smoking leaves which are too wet to burn in hades it would give a bad impression of 0 the business and the man who runs it unfortunately the home owner does not see things the same way conditions in the street in trout front of 0 the homes aret ara different the first man has raked ills his lawn the grass and leaves are thrown ov er the fence on the sidewalk at the edge of 0 the cement the next nest man has piled brush just beyond the sidewalk in front ot of the third home Is a huge pile of trash which is the accumulation on oil many years of 0 trying to burn wet leaves and rubbish the next man dumps the ashes from his stoves on the street around the corner a pile of pipe is on the sidewalk and across the street an old deor deer head is left tor for people to tall fall over at night in keeping with all this one man has scraped the manure from his corral out into the street the next man mail Is still more ambitious or takes more pride in ills his home or something ile he has planted flowers and shrubs ills his lawn is beautiful ile he has raked and swept ills his back yards there Is no trash or junk of any kind on his es IT IS ALL PILED IN THE STREET IN FRONT OF ills HIS HOME why go farther we would only see the same things over except that there might bo be added a few junked bunked automobiles and some tree stumps this Is a good town there are many tine fine homes the houses I 1 believe are above the average in the state the yards tor for the most part are well kept and clean but our streets are a disgrace because we insist on using them as a final resting place tor for all ot of our rubbish lots lets clean ern em up submitted |
