Show RAILROAD CO PAYS LARGE PART OF MILLARD TAXES the following letter was presented to the millard county board of 0 commissioners by a representative ot of the railroad company at the last meeting 0 of the board the letter Is self explanatory and Is printed here by consent of 0 the commissioners UNION unior 1 PACIFIC SYSTEM los angeles calk calif november 3 1933 the honorable board ot of county commissioners fillmore utah gentlemen it is my de desire sire to call your attention at this time to the situation with which the los angeles salt lake railroad company Is confronted in millard county and to bespeak your favorable consideration for any measures which may bring some relief to this company the largest is taxpayer in your county owing to the general business depression horn which the world has been suffering tor for nearly tour four years the revenues of 0 this company show a decrease tor for 1932 as compared with 1928 of 39 percent which has made it necessary us to practice the most rigid economy consistent with our duty to furnish sate safe and efficient service to the public this we have i done in every way within our power but in the matter of taxes which is not within our control we find that despite our reduced ability to pay the demands upon this company tor for the support of government have increased in many instances but in no other case to such an extent as in al Millard illard county for the same five year period 1928 to 1932 the total assessed value ot of all property in millard county was reduced or per cent while the property ot of this company assessed by tile the state tax commission was reduced only or three tenths ot of one percent and all property in the county other than LA decreased percent total taxes charged in the county decreased or percent while this companas comp anys taxes increased or percent and total taxes other than LA decreased or 24 per cent I 1 am not advised as to amount of total taxes charged in the county for 1933 but railroad taxes are again increased to the extent of 0 or per cent when we consider the decrease in ratio ot of collections to total taxes charged it appears that whereas the total collections other than from the railroad company in 1928 were per cent of the total charged and tor for 1932 were only per cent ol of the amount charged it Is apparent that this companas comp anys share of the total tax burden in millard county has more than doubled in the past five years or in other words has increased from per cent of 0 the total taxes paid to per cent ot of the total taxes paid it is understood of course that expenditures of 0 the county and its subdivisions sub divisions have been materially reduced as required by the decreased tax revenues baft but as indicated above the taxes paid by this company have increased to an alarming extent I 1 wish to urge upon you the importance of the utmost economy in the conduct ot of public business to the end that the staggering tax load may be lightened to an extent which with hoped for improvement in revenues will enable us to resume normal activities which have been curtailed or entirely suspended in view of 0 the data which I 1 have offered tor for your consideration it is evident that the prosperity of the railroad company is a most vital factor in the welfare of millard county arid and as the prosperity of the railroad is entirely dependent upon the patronage accorded to it by the people of the territory which it serves I 1 wish to solicit your active assistance in securing for los angeles salt lake railroad and affiliated filia ted lines of the union pacific system such transportation business as you may control and to request that you exert your influence in securing tor for us the patronage of the citizens and communities in your county yours very truly CHARLES ADAMS land and tax agent |
