Show STOP THE DOLE AND START THE WORK stop the dolo dole and start the work Is ie the ultimatum which the utah taxpayers association has bag served 0 n public officials as a result of a special pal meeting hold held september speaking ot of the present economic and social situation state chairman judge J A howell said it has haa now reached the point that the thousands of men and women who are receiving direct aid from public funds are becoming so comfortable under this system that the urge to work Is rapidly vanishing it if it la Is only to save the caliber of 0 our citizenship and to restore those people to sell belt respect a program of public works should be immediately instituted but the public works should proceed only where there iti Is an unemployment problem no county city or school district should attempt to promote any expenditures tor for public projects unless the money Is to used exclusively to take people off the dole and give them means of self support taxpayers should see that this condition Is observed and not permit more taxes to be heaped upon them tor for any other reason judge howell pointed out that during the last year we have had in this state a monthly average ot of people who have been receiving direct aid from public funds aggregating over three and a third million dollars tor for the year estimating five to a family this means that nearly people or approximately one third of the population of the state has been receiving direct or indirect financial aid from the public treasury without in nearly every case giving anything in return in the form of work this does not take into account all of the indirect contributions made by private charlies such as the community chest relief society and mothr church and fraternal institutions nor does it include the money spent tor for this purpose by the 29 counties of the state it if these were included it would easily be beyond tho the five million dollar mark in two months winter will bo be upon us said field judge howell there has been dilly dallying and delays since early spring and practically nothing has bag been done to give five relief furthermore whatever Is done should be to produce the maximum manual labor even it the costs are slightly higher because the purpose of this undertaking la is not to put money into the pockets ot of a few but to spread it over the widest possible number then the tax tar dollar given to help the unemployed will give a dollars worth ot of service to the taxpayers the utah taxpayers association mapped out a definite program which la is being submitted to all public officials fici tIcIa als ls |
