Show fish lake foresters hosts to 0 1 millard school officers by B K farnsworth A see our own forests outing was conducted last saturday may 19 by forest supervisor mr air A C mattsson and rangers bert L robins and mr air mace alace all of 0 the fish lako lake forest complimentary to the superintendent and the principals ot of alt all schools ot of millard county the excursion was staged in oak creek canyon millard county tho the group gathered at the rangers cabin some seven miles up the canyon above oak city at 10 A al A airey fairly airly good road is built and the trip was made in cars the blavat lon ion at the cabin is the flavor ol of the great valley below oak city Is about th the 0 fi first r s t t two wo ho hours u r s w were e r e sp spent e n t b by y the f foresters or e s t er s in a arranging r r an g i n g d details e t ai 1 s tor for the afternoon part a tor for the afternoon party and la in regular forest duties it was spent by the wives in arranging a sumptuous tray luncheon and it was spent by the school officers in discussion of their problems incident to the closing of this term of school promptly at 1230 the whistle blew ranger bert robins being the whistler all hands gathered informally about the door of the rangers cabin where they ate and swapped yarns until ealing ceased to be a pleasure A short hike to places of interest in the canyon followed ranger robins in charge the hike led thru the plantations where more than western yellow pines have been planted by the foresters A thousand new ones are planted yearly more alore than 75 percent ot of all trees planted are thriving they range now in height from 3 year olds which are now about tour four inches above ground to splendid specimens twelve to fourteen feet high now ten years old 1 these larger trees are now growing at the rate ot of from eight to awen ty tour four inches yearly when one looks oft off across a canyon where 20 tine fine healthy young pines are arranged in orderly fashion which ever way ivay one looks and realize this planting is tor for a reaping 75 to years hence he gets a deeper meaning ot of service to others and ot of appreciation tor for the good work foresters are doing the hike also led thru a 20 acre pasture in which the foresters tor eaters are ara experimenting with various grasses tor for re foraging the reserve in the past oak creek canyon has been severely over grazed to the tha extent that practically all the best grasses have disappear disappeared pd by careful control the forest service Is fast bringing it back to a deso rable grazing ground attention was also called to beneficial beno influences reforestation was having on water sheds the forest service are also doing a tremendous service in preparing beautiful recreational places adjacent to towns and cities I 1 the day meant much to the school men they left the canyon with a deep appreciation tor for government activity in conservation and for the men who are making the government ideal and a reality |
