Show POULTRY PO production IN FILI MORE by lon loa linker baker aith grade fillmore district school my plans for or the summer are to go BO into the poultry business the first thing thine to be taken into consideration would be what breed of chickens to choose there are three main types of domestic fowls namely 1 meat of asiatic origin type 2 general purpose or american type 3 egg laying or european type cype the general characteristics of the meat type are arc they are large weighing from 10 to 12 pounds they have a sluggish disposition all very quiet not nervous they make good sitters and mothers but are very poor egg producers the main breeds are the brahma cochins and Langs hangs hancs the general purpose breeds are medium in slie size weighing from 7 to V 9 pounds they are fairly rood good meat producers produce ra they make fairly good egg producers because of the tact fact that they are very quiet makes them good mothers the chief breeds are rhode laland island reds plymouth rock Win dotte and Orp hington the ess eg breeds are noted for being small in size weighing wel shing from 3 to 6 pounds one the account of them being small would make them very poor meat producers they are very nervous and very active so they would make poor sitters they would be no good for mothers but they are exceptional good egg producers the chief breeds are leg horns and Min orcas the Min orcas have long bodies very tery large combs their heads are carried rather high the Min oreas are as a close second to the leg horns they are known as the largest egg producing hens the eggs are a 1 white in color the leghorns Leg horns heads are small the eye of a good size ears lobes white comb and wattle red and black the legs and skin Is yellow the feathers are snugly laid to the body the leghorn la Is very tery hardy and one of the most active breeds of fowls rather small of size and famous for egg production there are several varieties of leghorns Leg horns of which the white brown and bluff are most common these breeds are kept on nearly every farm there are some used especially tor for egg production on a large scale for the reason that I 1 am going to keep chickens mainly tor for the production of eggs the single combed white leghorn would be chosen I 1 have definitely decided to care for one breed only because it has been proven that a mixture of breeds or mongrel stock is not satisfactory the next thing to be taken into consideration is how to procure the chicks 0 there are are two ways one is ito to send tor for the spring chicks and to procure them with the chicken or incubator since my choice of chickens Is the single combed white leghorn the incubator would be required because the leghorns Leg horns are not good sitters and are not good mothers it would be a loss to use them there is some expense in the incubator and one must have experience to have the production a success still there is a chance ot of some loss instead ot of buying an incubator I 1 hira have decided to send oft off to a chicken hatchery tor for my chicks since nature has provided the yoke sack ot of the egg to be taken into the body of the chicken which pro tides them with food tor for two or three days they could easily be shipped there are many chicken hatcheries to where I 1 could send somo some in cal continued on page eight POULTRY production IX IN FILI MORI ly by loa akar baker eth grade fillmore district school continued from page three some in ili the eastern states and even some in our own locality baby chicks could be delivered to us tor for from 12 cents to 16 cents from mantl and nephi I 1 have then decided to send to nephi for 1000 chicks which will arrive at my home four hours from when my order la Is tilled filled the chickens obtained here seem to be acclimated and will deack our home in good condition in a few hours the chickens should be purchased in march or april those obtained in march are a little difficult to brood on account of 0 cold weather but they mature sufficiently to make good layers the first season these early chicks are a little more expensive but this expense Is justified by these considerations the next thing to think about la Is the brooder tor for the brooding of the chicks the brooder serves as a artificial mother tor for the chicks the brooder must be placed in some house that can properly be heated the regular chicken coop is satisfactory for this purpose one brooder can be made to ac com from to chickens depending on its size the general plan of the brooder Is that of a warm box or room heated either by a small oil stove or a coal stove within the brooder Is what Is called a hoover A circular plate or cover Is placed about ten inches above the floor from the rim of this plate a cloth curtain extends to the floor pieces of cloth should come from different parts of the underside ol of the cover to the floor this cloth should be slit so the chicks can pass through and find a warm protection mong among the strips like being under a mothers wing the small brooder hobes houses have but one hoover while the large houses which are heated the brooder should be kept as nearly degrees F as possible fine sand should be scattered on the floor the brooder should have plenty of 0 sunlight it should be rat proof it should be roomy and have plenty ot of scratching space good ventilation should prevail and the temperature should bo be controlled easily with proper brooding conditions provided the next step in general is the care and feeding ot of the chicks in order to properly care tor for your lock flock good coops must be provided there are several types of 0 coops the most popular are the monitor and the shed root roof type I 1 prefer the shed root roof type this consists of 0 sloped root roof about 8 tt ft in the front and 5 tt ft in the back with a measurement ofia tt ft the coop can be made as large as necessary according to the number ot of your flock the lower part should face the north and the high side the south the alie upper halt half of the south Is covered with screen this makes it possible for the sunlight to go to the very back of the coop canvas flaps that can roll up like a window shade can be pulled down in cold weather or whenever it is necessary the perches are located in the back of the coop underneath the perches is located dropping boards under the dropping boards the nests are located making it possible to there is 13 no need ot of artificial heat in a climate like ours it if the coops are properly built they will be located on dry soil or covered with gravel or cemented running water should be very convenient but it if this cant duj eidl be furnished the water should be changed very often at least four square feet of 0 room should be provided the root should be waterproof the coop should be properly cleaned very often by removing the drops changing the grit and whitewashing the coop it if the chickens are properly cared for or they will lay during the winter to be paying they would have to lay in the winter the food should consist of 0 green tood food egg shells grit and they should have plenty of clean water tho the little chicks food should coning bones and lesh flesh of food that would go to mak the eggs should be gathered twice every day and kept in a cool place until shipment it would be ad visible to join some poultry association the eggs should be crated and sent to the association in the winter when it Is cold the eggs should be sent by freight in the summer when it Is hot they should be sent on mail |
