Show WINKING AT THE LAW now new officers als have just been appointed d to adin administer inister law and justice locally it is the beginning of a new year and a now town noard doard anti and mayor zea zealous lout to win the reputation of making this community a better place in which to live and yet ever mindful of the cites limited financial resources and the taxation burden have so arranged the duties of the different officers and carefully selected the men in order that tho the city might get the maximum from the money it is to spend every fair minded indi vidual recognizes the fact that unless law and order is maintained in any community it is not the most desirable place in which to livo live in ili fact all law lav is is proper methods of conducting community rela relationship tion ship tho th best methods of getting along together so to speak that have been tried and handed down by the ages with out observance of law government is 1 but ut a farce and civilization in its finest sence is lacking on the other liand hand with crime as prevalent as it is today to day and the alie tax burden as near unbearable as it is at the present time law abiding citizens find it an expensive and difficult task to maintain the proper order legislative organizations try to remedy the situation and they cram crain our statute books with laws intended to do this and that all of them looked upon by the public with more or less critical eye and many of thern them branded as f freakish to say the least legislative bodies are helpless in most cases the more effort they put forth the worse conditions become in fact a noted american observes that there is no su lucli ell tiling thing as respect for law in this country any more th the popular modern tendency is fast becoming that of winking at the law of course nearly everyone abhors the general condition most people recognize the value of law and order and see conditions in the lives of their fellow men that they lament and would like to see changed the trouble is ia that too many of these self same people break breah the law in some soine respect and try to justify themselves for their transgression most of us see the mistakes of the other fellow over whom we have very little control and in fail to give attention to our own violations viol atins which are totally within our jurisdiction we want to see the other fellow handled and yet sot up tip an eternal howl if the law lav strikes tit at home in a community like our own this is especially noticeable noti cable everyone is 19 related to everyone else and never forgets that blood is 19 thicker than water until in a final analysis the public coil constituting sti one large family finds itself arrayed in battle against the haild handful ful of officers whom it is paying to maintain order within its own ranks in other words wo we burden ourselves with heavy taxes to hire men to uphold the law and then all do we can to hinder the officers in doing their duty and if in an officer outwits out wits us and arrests a friend or relative we feel to condemn him for it let lef a man show himself good citizen to the extent that thab he will help an officer apprehend a breaker of the law lie ile is immediately br branded glided a coward a traitor a stool pigeon when in fact lie he is the hi highest gliet type of citizen the kind of hero that will sacrifice the favor of a friend for duty As was before mentioned new officers for this community have just been appointed they are selected men all citizens of the finest type but their success or failure depends upon us lot let us its always remember member ie that we are hiring them we want them to do good work and therefore should cooperate with thorn them let us see to it that they lire are successful no matter upon whom the hand of the law may fall in the end we will be a happier more prosperous community |
