may re repeat ile cat that the n divine spark does not lie in agree ments in organizations in institutions institution R f la in masses or in groups spirituality with its faith its hope its charity can be increased by each individuals own effort and in proportion as each in increases his own store ot of spirituality in that proportion I 1 in creases the idealism of democracy for centuries the human race be bc gloved that divine inspiration rested in a few the result was blind faith in ini 11 religious hierarchies the divine of kings the world has been aisil lullo ned of this belief that rests in any special group or class whether it be through a creed a tyr 7 early anny of kings or of proletariat our individualism insists upon tile the divine 1 in each human being it rests upon it the firm faith that the divine spark can be awakened in every heart beart it was the refusal to com compromise compromis promis e these things that led to the migration ot of those religious groups who so largely composed our forefathers our fled religious faiths are the tha apotheosis of spiritual individualism the vast multiplication of voluntary organizations for altruistic purposes ny are ara themselves proof of tile the ferment r of spirituality service sen ice and mutual responsibility these associations for advancement of public welfare im provement pro morals charity public 7 ion health the clubs and societies tor for recreation and intellectual advance i ment represent something moving at a far greyer greeter depth than Jo joining liling they represent the widespread aspera i those who triumphed in service tor for j from them comes the uplift of the human heart and the uplift of the human mind while there are forces in the growth i of our individualism which must must be be curbed with vigilance yet there are no less glorious spiritual forces grow ing within that promise for till the e future tur there Is developing eloping in our people a n new valuation of individuals and of groups and of nations it Is a rising vision of service indeed it if j I 1 were to select the social force that above all others has advanced sharp ly during these past years of suffer ing it Is that of service service to those with whom we come in contact service to the nation and service to the world itself it if we examine the i great mystical forces of the past seven years we find this great spiritual force poured out by our people as never before in the history of the world tho ideal of service just now we are weakened by the I 1 feeling of failure of immediate realization 1 of the great ideals and hopes that I 1 arose through the exaltation of war 1 war by its very nature sets loose chaotic forces of which the resultants cannot be foretold or anticipated the insensitiveness to the brutalities of physical violence and all the spiritual dislocations os oj war have left us at tho the moment poorer the amount of serenity and content in the world I 1 li smaller the spiritual reaction after the war var has been in part the fruit of some illusions fusions during those five years in tile the presence of unity of purpose and the mystic emotions of war many men came to believe that salvation lay in mass and group action they have seen the spiritual and material mobilization of nations of classes and groups tor for sacrifice and service they have
