proclamation the state of lot agriculture A A hinckley has called a convention ot of forward looking men from all parts ot of the state UP to meet at salt lake on february to discuss defective ways ot of carrying out the spirit ot of the proclamation the meeting will be addressed by governor mabey president E G peterson ot of the utah agricultural college mayor C clarence of 0 salt lake city superintendent G N childs of 0 salt lake city schools state t te director ot of health education dr ss E G gowans state health corn COM missioner m t ioner dr T B beatty lottie paul baxter judge E F colborn and others in his proclamation the governor calls upon all ot of our institutions to cooperate in the campaign the text 0 or the proclamation follows hy by the governor of tho the state of utah A A SITUATION which vitally affects the economic and health interests and pio pi ogress greas ot of the people of 0 utah has been called to the attention ot of the executive in a report from the commissioners ot of agriculture summarized the following facts are cited the per capita consumption of m milk ilk butter cheese and other dairy products in utah Is approximately only seventy per cent of the per capita consumption in the nation include ing the southern states where only the use ot of these products la is very limited of the relatively small amount we do consume consume in utah we import irom from other states about sixteen percent in view of the favorable natural conditions tor for we me production of dairy products in this state we should be large exporters ot of dairy products considered from a physiological standpoint the fostering of greater production in dairy products Is even more important to the public weal surgeon general hugh S cummings chief of the U S public health service is credited with the statement that every growing should consume a quart of milk a day statistics indicate that utah is one of the tour four ot of the 48 states reporting no mole than 50 per cent of 0 the school Lh children ildren as regular consumers of milk A survey ot of school CL ildren of one ot of the largest cities oi of the country discloses the fact that those that drink milk liberally complete the eight grades of school two years youn ger than those who do not drink milk dr T B beatty secretary ot of the state board of health and vital sta bistis declares milk is the bo most valuable of foods containing all of the essential food elements it is rich in vitamins tamine vi principles which are absolutely sol essential to normal growth and health and there milk particulars among the poor grateful tor for these endea endeavors vom toward more intelligent methods it Is my desire to see a continuance ot of such undertakings much good can n also be done by the churches with their cooperation in this cause our future citizens can be ba made sounder men and women and better equipped tor for the battles of life everything possible should be done to sustain the dairy industry and encourage the tha formers to secure dairy cows and learn how bow to utilize them that bank deposits are materially larger in dairy sections la Is indicative of the prosperity the state might on ea joy it this industry maintained the high place it deserves more than any other it is truly a home industry it will be seen from the foregoing that the problem is physiological and economic the solution isolation of it lies la in a concerted effort to increase the production ot of dairy products through a greater consumption ot of them incidentally dea tally such a return to
