seem the picture in such exhibitions are those that are given thumbs down by the theatrical pa eions business pictures are being increasingly L crea singly used by schools church s and other the motion picture bureau industrial department of 0 the Y 31 CA C A but ono of a score of 0 organizations who are listing pictures provided by business concerns of mat national ional reputation the demand tor for these films is greater than the supply and con convince vines one that this type of picture Is successful in meeting requirements ot of the non theatrical field namely enter tain ment and informational and from the manufacturers point ot of view a direct sales and educational servi service c e to consumer when boiler makers request to soo boo I 1 how ty typewriters pe writers are arc made and churches are eager to present on slit sin day evening product ica ot of caal grow lag of oranges 0 etc and coal miners ask tor lor 1 A lookin look in on tho the silk bilk industry one does not have to ask do people want to know about these things the present system ot of production and distribution ot of entertain ment pictures makes the securing ot of the comparatively few available films extremely difficult practically the entire supply of entert entertaining aning pictures to the non theatrical field Is secured through independent non theatrical a service not too bountiful or satisfactory satis factory at too present time alrae exhibitors fearing caring that the nan theatrical will intorf re 1 with their business demand that alo distributors retrain refrain from providing any theatrical picture to non theatrical exhibitors on the other hand the exhibitor continually being prodded by committees on detter better films to select higher class picture pic Is seriously handicapped by the methods thru thra which he must book pictures from dis tribu tors few it if any exhibitors have the option ot of selection or choice of 0 programs the theatrical held producers lg ure on a quick turnover turn over the average expectancy being a complete return ot of their initial investment in 14 weeke or less with ono one hundred per cent profit in an additional aty fifty two weeks until some philanthropist or philan organization makes possible the production ot of special pictures tor for the church and school without the thought ot of financial return they will have to bo be content with the catch as catch can from the various film agencies the school though able at the present time to secure but a few exper experimental mental film courses ot of study or direct supple material to their text Is in a much more favorable position than the church as practically all comedies serials and many dramatic productions have a direct bearing upon the subjects of 0 physical and corn com mercial geography goo graphy history physics and literature while the industrial or business pictures lend lead themselves readily to vocational guidance science and mechanics one of ahe the most valuable uses to which our schools can put the industrial picture is in connection with the vocational guidance courses there is no doubt in the minds of educators and employment managers that a large per cent of our industrial unrest Is due to square pegs in round holes it if through an industrial picture one or more boys and girls find a more congenial field of labor or become more interested in the thing they are doing the picture will have served the nation well wall members of the theatre owners league of america have issued a statement in which they offered to open their houses any morning during the week to educational institutions or societies for the tree free tion alon ot of motion pictures pertaining to education whether the league has realized an ansual opportunity to ren rea der a priceless service to our coming citizens or whether the offer was prompted in self defense or to create a greater spirit of good will to the theatre or to retard a supposed encroachment croach ment upon the theatrical business by the rapidly increasing use of film by industries and institutions churches and schools we care not the tact fact Is that they have offered it is an opportunity worthy ot of consideration de and a service of real me it it Is up to the local institutions to accept at once this generous offer with the newer types ot of projectors project ois and generating outfits the motion pis ture Is now available to all communities from the smallest to the largest and to all industries isolated or in groups through the welfare organizations of 0 the plant or in operation cooperation co with outside agencies the noon hour film service Is becoming quite a popular thing the industrial picture lias has its place with the comedy at the department part ment nights at the plant Y lit M C As club houses or community con cen it Is invariably found on the program of 0 the foremans and man averail staff meetings production do de apartments part ments are using these picture as a means of training new employees by showing them the relation of parts to each other and the importance of the part each plays in producing a per feet product these men experience a new thrill and satisfaction in their work by appreciating and understanding their contribution which makes others dependant upon their handicraft and their dependence
