Show COAL LANDS OF ALASKA DENDY DENBY AND FALL OFFERED LAND OF NORTH ON SAME TERMS AS TEA POT DOME naval secretary and secretary of interior accused of scheme to transfer rich reserves of coal territory washington former secretary fall and secretary denby were declared in a letter laid before president coolidge friday by john E ballaine an alaskan railroad constructor to have entered into negotiations in july 1921 for transfer and lease of the rich Man coal reserves of alaska along the same lines as were later followed in the teapot dome oil lease the alaskan coal lease was not executed but the letter said the navy department largely through the efforts of rear admiral J K robison had assiduously refused ever since to permit the use of alaskan coal by the navy mr ballaine who contrasted con trusted the alaskan central railroad the forerunner of the present government line presented his letter to the pr president ea as a supplement to previous charges that powerful interests are at work to hinder the development of alaska he also has presented charges to several senat senators orv including chairman lenroot of the senate oil investigating committee the official files show that secretary fall fail of the interior ay and secretary denby began negotiations early as july 1021 1921 for the transfer 0 of f the naval coal reserves in the mat anuska field from the navy to the interior department and for the leasing of that reserve lor for a period of fifty years the letter said the negotiations and the terms agreed upon between the two secretaries in this coal reserve ran along lines exactly parallel with the negotiations and the terms of the least of the teapot dome reserves no lease of the matakuska Ma coal reserves was executed but the net result was that naval mining operations in the matakuska Ma ere transferred by secretary denby to the interior in department and abruptly closed in may 1922 at a time when the navy as official reports show had a mine developed ready to produce tons a day with tons of coal blocked out in that mine and with tons of the sam equality in sight by diamond drilling in the coal creek district during the negotiations over the matakuska Mat Ma coal reserves and for two years continuously up to the present misleading announcements contrary to the established official facts about the quality of the mat anuska coal have been given wide publicity by the bureau of engineers of the navy of which admiral robison is head and by the bureau of mines of the interior of which dr bain is the head |
