Show PLAIN BY THE PUBLISHER whether or not a publisher should sell space in the columns of his newspaper advocating a policy or views that conflict with his own has always been a muted question among editors subscribers bers to a allchin michigan an weekly objected recently to certain advertising ver carried by that paper and the publisher took the opportunity ort unity to explain his position in regard to such advertising ills his statement which lie he printed will be or of interest to many readers of the progress and is as f follows the editor of the record ex poets that the paper will receive gome criticism each wee week and andi hopes that oc occasion caslon occasionally 1 it may merit some commendation but af after ter all we realie that in some respects they amount to the same thing that neither has much intrinsic value in the payment ment of bills or in the support of a family in this respect cents go much farther than sentiment during the past week three criticisms han have e reached this office effir C all upon the same subject and this leads us to make collie comments upon these criticisms the first came from one of our much esteemed farmer frion frien do Is who discontinued his subscription to the record because of in an advertisement therein that opposes the adoption of the prohibition hibi tion amendment the last critis cism that reached this thi 11 s 01 office f was on a postal card from a an elderly lady whose friendship wo we have prized for nearly a ibar ter of a century whose name was on the subscription list of this p paper aper when the present pub usher lisher assumed control and who has over ever since been regarded as a staunch and steadfast friend of the paper and its editor her card follows the name being omitted mi eted dear siri am very much surprised and grieved that you are allowing an all advertisement in your paper advocating the licensing of the liquor tr atric I 1 thought that you was a man mail that could not bo be bought the reason that prohibition did not prohibit when michigan had the law was because it was not enforced I 1 hope there are arc true men here now that will enforce the law as they do in kansas editorial and ad columns separate now my dear friend I 1 a am in extremely t rry that you seem to be un tb 3 to distinguish between s sat at ments made in in paid display ad er ar space in tills this paper and the opinions of its ed ator for I 1 supposed it was b known blown by everybody for many years before bel oro the record came linto into ex existence istance that the editorial and advertising columns of any I 1 paper were entirely distinct and that the editor did not ily give endorsement to any stat ment made in its advertising columns the receipts from ad vertis eing sold are ab ol necessary cessare to pay the expenses of publishing a paper for no publication li could exist on the revenue from subscriptions only in a town many times the sie of imlay city and if a millionaire j should attempt that impossible I 1 f feat cat he would soon be bankrupt hence it is that newspaper space i is sold to persons who have a i message they wish to convey to I 1 i the readers of that paper and the advertiser not the editor II is responsible rec pol isible f for or statements there I 1 in so long as they are arc in proper language and do no I 1 wrong to others in this case the advertiser has given his agreement with these conditions land and we have no reison re rc ison to believe i that lie he would desire sire to have it otherwise but if he should tr agress these them conditions the records censor would exercise his prerogative and eliminate it during the past week a lady tho the wife of one of our merchants called up the record office on oil the phone and inquired if we had sold out to the saloon gang and expressed surprise that the publisher would sell a little of his s space pace to the opponents of prohibition hibi tion to present their side of question in response I 1 asked lier her if her merchant husband would sell his merchandise to a saloon nian man and if so would he be endors eing the saloon m mans ins opinions by so doing the new paper man sells advertising space as the merchant sells his dry goods groceries shoes clothing etc I 1 have persistently and believe consistently out of consideration for our home merchants the propositions of profitable advertising contracts from mail order houses but the appreciation shown the paper by our merchants in the meager amount of advertising space used almost convinces me that the acceptance of both might have been justifiable effrom an economic standpoint opinions not sold 1 1 I feel gratified by your expression of confidence that I 1 was a man mail that could not be bought and I 1 can see no reason now why that confidence should be shaken for while I 1 sell space in the paper and very often give it for others to express their opinions I 1 do not and will not sell my op inions to anybody at any price your statement that tho the reason that prohibition did not prohibit when michigan Alic higan had the law was because it was not enforced is one of the strongest arguments of the opponents of prohibition today and has been the argument used in the advertisements ti i to which you yon take exception cep tion it is for that reason that many sincere and doncien bious temperance people do not look with favor upon the adoption at this time of the statewide prohibitory amendment but you say that you hope there are arc true men here now that will enforce the law do we furnish any a ny proof that such will be the ease case when strong prohibitive features in the general liquor law are violated every day sunday included in the larger cities and towns and no attempt is being made by the temperance people to enforce respect for the law we believe that right and fair play demands that both sides to every public question should have an all opportunity to be heard before passing and if the advocates of prohibition cannot meet tb arguments of and refute their claims certainly they ought not to win out by a plan of stifling discussion of a question of so much importance as aa this one which is to be decided by the electors in a few weeks it has been pointed to as a shame that every reform movement in past ages has been met with intolerance and attempt at strangulation on the part of its opponents surely the reformers of the twentieth century would not resort to these antiquated tactics of the opponents of reform to grain gain their point at this time paper for all classes the record is not published for any one person or class but for people of tastes and opinions hence it is the effort of the publisher to give each week something to please each class without expecting that everything in the pr paper aper will entirely suit every reader but lie he has hopes that every reader will find something that suits his tastes and opinions all therefore are arc entitled to consideration when it connes comes to discussion of public questions to all three of our critics above mentioned I 1 would like to ask in all kindness it if you do not think that your zeal for tile the cause of prohibition has led you into what borders closely upon narrow minded fanaticism instead of courting a fair and free discussion of the questions at issue and if possible win a more glorious victory by giving your opponents and open field and a fair fight to the lady who criticized criticised by telephone I 1 would ask if she on oil page ingo a 0 PLAIN STATEMENT concluded from page 3 will do the record the favor to tell lier her merchant husband that oho he knows that advertisements in this paper are read because she has read some of them herself and she can add upon the authority of tile the writer of this article taht the revenue derived from the ad advertising she objects to in it the past three weeks amounts to more than all the ad ertis vertis cing in this paper
