Show THE WHITE PLAGUE IN UTAH there tny tuberculosis in utah Is a statement we frequently hear although not so often as formerly there aro are a tow few consumptive es eg hero here but they are all health seekers from other states Is another remark often heard A prominent citizen recently said to the writer we used to say that no case of tuberculosis over originated in utah but wo we have had to give up that idea wo we know of too many cases that did originate hero here A study was made recently of tile the death i sports reports for a period of time in ono one ot of the utah cities fourteen deaths from tuberculosis were reported by attending physicians durl during tig that period four of the victims had lived their entire lives varying from 24 to 46 years in utah ono one victim had lived in utah 12 years yeara another 6 years two cases supposed to have been contracted in ill wyoming which has a climate linato cl similar illar to ours in the other six cases tile tho disease had been contracted in other states and death after only a brief res mence here bore these death reports indicate that the white plague as tuberculosis is often called can or hero here and that our climate la Is not an infallible cure tor for it wo we havo have no way of knowing the Il number limber of consumptives ives in utah tire the death reports lied filed with tho the state hoard board of health show that persons died from consumption in the state last year many doctors fall to recognize tuberculosis or report it as some other malady to spare the feelings of the ho ainaly family ain lly so probably tile tho toll toil of victims Is oven even greater than tho the records show wo we can call only guess at the number of living victims tho the law requires that all cases of tuberculosis bo be reported to the board of health by tho attending physicians the state board ot of stealth health has been endeavoring deavo ring for nars to persua persuade d the ic ev stift doctors to observe va this law but without success it Is evident form the experience of other states as well as of t utah that tho the doctors will continue 0 o ignore this law until the people adako wok to its value and compel their doctors to obey the he law wo we can never eradicate the disease until overy every caso case Is immediately recognized and reported by the doctor and every necessary precaution taken to pro vent the infection ot of others it Is generally estimated tn in the united states tho the estimate being based on oil the result of careful investigations that there are more than ton living cases jt ft tuberculosis to every death 11 in utah on account of the many deaths among transients we are very conservative and estimate about ivo five cases to every death we ther therefore afore conclude e that there are about 1000 persons suffering today from some form of tuberculosis tit in our state |
