Show GROWING TREES IN MONTANA cannot successfully be done east of mountains without use of artificial water R N sutherlin editor of the rocky mountain husbandman says bays we have written many columns in regard to planting trees for use and ornament but we are not of the class class that recommend in any part of montana without irrigation although trees do grow and bear fruit in the region west weal of the mountains ut nt it Is loves labor lost to try to grow trees or shrubs for ornament or use anywhere east of the mountains without artificial watering for it can not be done anyhow it never has been done and many attempts have been made wo we love growing trees but in order to shade our dry farming homes it will be necessary for our friends to draw water from the well or haul it from the creek to keep them alive through july and august we find the buffalo berry bush buah trying to grow upon the dry land but it kills back although it sometimes manages to survive but it Is not a growth that you would bo be p proud roud of since it requires entirely too much time for the bush to make a tree it will take 50 years at least SO BO wo would not attempt to grow trees on our western praises without wo we could get water from some source |
