Show Taxpayers Meeting Is Well Attended A large number of Milford taxpayers, tax-payers, met Friday evening in the I. O. O. F. hall and listened to Professor V. S. McKendrick, head of the re-! search department of the Utah Tax-1 payer's Association, explain the work- j ings of his department and what it j has accomplished. At the beginning of his talk he I said that after a careful study of the 1 last audit of the town's books and investigating in-vestigating the present financial condition con-dition of the town, he could not be liberal enough in words of praise for the town authorities. He found that the indebtedness had been decreased by large sums, public work advanced and the tax rate reduced 25 per cent. Seldom had he found improvement in so marked degree. As to the workings of his department depart-ment Professor McKendrick said that the last State legislature had bond i propositions totaling ?4, 000.000 up for consideration and information from the research department showed show-ed that the present bonded debt was over S40.000.000.00 or SS0.40 per capita. That S12.000.000 was being paid now for maintaining the government govern-ment in Utah. That Sl.300.000 taxes went delinquent in 1926 became property prop-erty owners were short of funds. With that kind of a showing no addition was made to the bond debt by the 1927 legislature. Among things which he said the association was advocating was: keeping a property ledger in which was listed all the property of the town such as tools, pipe, machinery etc., and having an inventory taken every vears. Making a budget, then living up to it. Having a real independent audit of the financial condition of the town, with comments and recom- j mediations by the auditor, exp'ain-; ing to the board where improvements j and pavings could be made. I A careful study of all pronered ex- j penditures first with the idea of do-, termining the necessity, and second to determine the best and most ccon- j omical method. At the close of the meeting mem-; bership cards were passed out and . Milford starts out with a membership , of 30 in the Milford unit cf trie Utani Ttaxpayer's Association.
