Show RUMANIA AND ITS DEBT TO US. The government of Washington should be commended for calling Rumania's Ru-mania's attention to the fact, that her debt to the United States still lives. Never having paid a cent of it, either in principal or interest, ana never having even remotely referred to its existance since the money was borrowed from us, Rumania might be filled with agonizing fears that the dear little American obligation had died of neglect were it not for this timely assurance of our minister minis-ter at Bucharest that it not -only lives but is larger than ever. Alongside the "moocntng" of other European nations, this Romanian I O U is very modest, only thirty-six nillion dollars in principal and nine and a half millions in interest, but inasmuch as Rumania has negotiated refunding agreements with other creditors and ignored us. we do not like it. This Rumanian debt stands for cold rash borrowed after the war was over andl $12,000,000 worth of surplus sur-plus American war supplies in France which appealed to Rumania so strong ly that she decided to take them ov- I There has been nothing unpleasant j j in our relations with Rumania overj (this debt. She never has said any-j any-j 'bing derogatory of the money she borrowed or the supplies she got. I She has just neglected to pay. She ha s handled the whole matter on the j European plan. j We won the World war and saved jthe Allies and they have been bor-1 bor-1 rowing from us much of the time since then. Tt has been expensive, but it will ; be ;, splendid investment if we only profit by the experience and through- out all future time stay in the United j States and mind our own business Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
