Show Opening of Fishing Season But Week Away; Fever Felt Fish millions of them from streams hundreds of them are calling to anglers thousands of them and on June 15, Tuesday, the fish, streams and men are going to get together in a merry tug of war that will continue throughout the summer and early fall. For, upon that day Utah's famous fishing waters are going to be thrown open to the habitants of the world and before the close of the season 100,-000 100,-000 individuals will have made at ! least one effort to grab the finny prizes from the rivers and creeks of the state. Fishing in the lakes and reservoirs will open at later dates, except Fish lake, which opens coincidentally with the streams. Idaho, sister state on the north, and another Mecca for lovers of the outdoors, opens most of its waters to fishermen June 1, following a three-month ' lay-off. Fishing is a nine months' sport in most parts of the Gem state. Good roads, built by the state, county and forest service, are continually con-tinually opening new territory to the anglers and a well organized fish and game department Is keeping keep-ing the streams well stocked, assuring' assur-ing' future generations plenty of an-glin;.:. an-glin;.:. Some idea of the hold the fly and line have on the people of the nation na-tion may be noted in the government report, which shows that 5,000,000 fishing and hunting licenses were issued is-sued last year. This is an avorage of one license for every twenty-flvs persons in the country. In Utah, with Its half million population, there were 55,000 licenses Issued, or about one for every ten. In Idaho there were 61,000 licenses issued, or about one in every nine. Utah's licenses just about doubled In the last five-year pedior and unless signs fail, there will be a marked increase in-crease this year over last year. Utah has a vast fishing area iu the Wasatch mountain range. This range, covering about a fifth of the area of the state is draiuod by hundreds of streams and each stream is stocked with trout. And from June 15 on each stream will have its quota of fishermen and each angler will get fish for his efforts. It is hard to designate the most popular fishing place iu the state, for there are many near and far. Fish lake will draw the biggest crowd. Beaver river, Panguitch lake. Prove river, Puffer lake will also have their share. From all reports fishing will be good this year, as for the past six years the game department of the state has been administered by officials offi-cials whose main Idea has been to preserve and propagate the game of the state and not just draw their pay for doing nothing. More fish per capita of population popula-tion have been planted in Utah In the past five years than in any state in the Union and the splendid finning finn-ing we arc now enjoying Is a result of that policy. |
