Show LKNGTH OV STAPLE LEVER TO IN CREASE FLEECE AY EIGHTS s Profitable wool production depends de-pends to a considerable extent on the weight of individual fleeces. A century ago the average fleece weight for wool in the United States was less than two pounds, but there has been a gradual increase in the weights for American sheep until now the average is about 7 1-2 lbs. The United Stales department of agriculture has just completed a 3-yi-ar study of the factors which influence in-fluence the weight of clean marketable market-able wool from Rambouillet sheep under range conditions. It finds that both length of staple and density of fleece influence the weight, but the length of staple is of considerably more importance than density, because be-cause of the greater value per pound of the longer staple. Satisfactory den slty can be maintained while breeding breed-ing for greater length of staple in Rambouillet fleeces. Beaver county fleeces, we believe, are considerably above that average, but there are still possibilities for increasing in-creasing those average weights. Beaver county is to have a demonstration demon-stration of this at shearing time when the flocks are in the shearing pens." If an extra pound of wool on each sheep in the future would interest inter-est you. it is to your advantage to be present at this demonstration. Further Fur-ther announcement of the date will be made later. Lew Mar Price County Coun-ty Agent. |
